And, no, George -- that guy had absolutely, positively NOTHING to do with
this article -- guaranteed.

Our AOPA airport rep was also useless in OUR fight a couple of years
ago to save our airport.

In fact, worse than useless, because to make himself look like a
bigshot he fed the AOPA a load of rumors and legends about the airport
and its history, which they published in AOPA Pilot. If the owners of
the airport--a large university system in a large, left-coast
state--had seen that published nonsense they would have laughed our
airport group out of town.

Nick did a terrific (and very, VERY thorough) job of writing about all the
unusual and fabulous things that are going on in our very "un-Iowa-ish"
community.

We've been getting emails and calls all day long, and -- BEST OF ALL -- our
airport commission and manager have forwarded this article to our City
Councilmembers. You know -- those folks who think our airport is nothing
but a drain on the taxpayers?

:-)

Thank you, AOPA!

Congratulations and nice write up Jay.

We didn't have a rep when our battle started, but we have one now and
he was one of those really active in fighting for the airport.

An interesting side note, the airport commission did a financial
impact study that showed our small airport had about a $10 million
impact on the local economy. This brought cries of foul, and down
right derision so the opponents commissioned their own study. Its
results? We have a $16 million impact instead of $10 million.

The state of Michigan has a film using us as an example on how to
fight those who want to close the airports.

Remember, our City Council has taken an ominous (and politically brilliant)
new tack. They are no longer "against" the airport -- they are now trying
to take direct control of the airport (from the independent airport
commission) in an effort to "help" it!

They don't want to "harm" the airport -- they want to be on the "same team"
as the airport -- and they see (and are portraying) the airport commission
as an "obstacle" to this change.

This little twist is going to make fighting this change MUCH harder, since
voters in any referendum have about a 5-second attention span. As soon as
they hear "the council is trying to help the airport" they are going to tune
out everything we might say about "future problems" due to this action...

I have to tip my hat to them -- I didn't expect such an intelligently
planned attack.

Great article Jay. Glad to hear the town getting some good press. I hope
this helps score some points for the airport and it's contribution to the
local economy.
