How did we all do before Flarm was developed?

There are quite a lot of examples of Flarm in use with a gliders coming the opposite way along a low ridge in Balleka's latest video:

If the new update is out will there be a problem if some have the update and some don't.

Flarm Response:

Yes, you are correct, that would be a problem. Devices with the old firmware cannot communicate with the new firmware. From the next firmware release, we will make sure that the protocol changes automatically at the changeover date. Unfortunately that was not possible for this update.

For this contest, I would recommend that nobody updates their devices until after the contest.

Well, if someone has already updated, how long would it take to update everyone? With all the "tech help" likely to be there, it could be done as part of the safety briefing.
Just a thought.

The problem is not only at this contest. I think the prudent thing to do is NOT update your powerflatm until the last weekend of March if you plan to fly beforehand.
I hope this will he clarified when the new firmware becomes available.

Strange idea.
As soon as the update is available, everybody should do the update before he takes of the next time. That is the only way to make sure that all airborne systems can communicate.

I don't think that would work so well because an unknown minority of
the pilots who want to fly soon after the update may be the ones who
need to sort out a cable or help to do it. Better to all do it at the end

of the month and ask around and make sure everyone in one's club/
contest/soaring area is organised.

Yes, this would be the right way in a perfect world. But since we know that most people are procrastinators, than it is better if we all procrastinate in this case.

Since this update was scheduled before the last one, and the instruction is very specific, my bet is that on April 1st your unit will display a message like "I am not working" and mean it.
