There is typically a high density of tour traffic over the area, including helicopters at 3000'. The tradition is to self-announce on the grand canyon frequency (120.65). You'll hear people saying things like "... right turns above the dam at 3500". Boulder City is 8 miles to the south west. |

Hoover Dam is about 10 flight minutes from Boulder City. It's a little farther from North Las Vegas and takes longer because of the Class B. When you are in the vicinity of the dam, be on the lookout. There are lots of scenic flights, both fixed wing and helicopters in the area. When we were there on Sunday the 20th, there was a guy in a Bonanza who was totally confused in the class B VFR route, argued with the departure controller, feigned a bad radio connection to cover his confusion, then almost hit us over the dam. We scooted out of there and went over to Boulder City to shoot a very windy landing and to walk around. It was pretty quiet. - - - Al C-172 Spokane, WA |
