I used to fly a P-Baron with a GNS 430 (you have one of the data cards
out of it , filed /G and was given GPS approaches all the time. Maybe
a controller here can clear that up for us (or your "friend").

When he asked if I ever noticed that I've never been assigned a GPS or
RNAV approach when filing /G, I really couldn't remember if I have. Can
anyone else out there confirm being assigned a GPS approach when filing /G?

Typically, I will always request the approach I prefer rather than rely on
ATC to assign an approach. When flying to airports with only GPS
approaches (twice weekly over this past year), I have never encountered any
resistance as a /G requesting a specific GPS approach.

Why bother buying a GNS 430 when you can just input the waypoints into
a Garmin Etrex and fly that way?

I should have put a smiley so you knew I was kidding...refrring to
another thread about risks of using a non-IFR GPS for IFR flight.
