Well, pilots from the U.S. are out of luck then; we don't have aviation photo IDs.

As I understand it they were self flown tours. So they felt the added
requirements imposed by the law would stop foreign pilots from taking
part.

Oh, ok, I missed that part. Thanks.

The aviation photo ID has to be issued by the Australian authorities. Also
to self pilot you need to have an Australian licence. The details are here
and if you have not lost the will to live you can see why self fly safari
holidays are not worth the effort.

That tour operator was forced out of business by the security laws put
in
place by the Australian government.

What's the difficulty for a two-week safari?

For some reason most of the messages on this thread were blank in my
newsreaders, so sorry if I repeat someone else. The problem faced by
GoAnna was that pilots would have to apply for a security card AFTER
then entered Australia. We went on a GoAnna flight this past summer
(knowing it might be our last chance). We had a GREAT time, but if we
had to go to Australia 2 or 3 weeks early to apply for the card it would
have made it a 5 or more week vacation. A 3.5 week get away was
difficult enough to plan! It's a shame Mal is out of business it was
the best 12 days of our lives. We saw really cool stuff.

Mainly this part...

Remember, if you operate an aircraft in Australian Territory after 31
December 2005 and you need to hold a license issued by CASA, you must have
a current AVID or ASIC.

Right, so pilots need to have an aviation photo ID; or, for regular access
to secure areas at "public transport" airports, they need a security ID that
requires a background check.

Similar requirements exist now for all pilots at several GA airports here in
Massachusetts. I think the security requirment is an unwarranted intrusion;
but I don't see how it would put a tour operator out of business, or even
impose a significant impediment.

Now suppose you run a business that caters to foreign pilots and that
is the vast portion of your business. Now what if each of those
pilots had to have a US issued license to fly those planes?

That means, unlike one of us going to a different airport and having
to get checked out before flying the FBO's airplanes, we'd have to
sign up and go through all the training required to earn a US license.
before then could rent us a plane.

Incidentally the US already has a "Universal Licensing System" called
a driver's license with a photo ID.
