The service is provided by a private enterprise (actually, two of them, XM and Baron Services), and is not required for use of the NAS. It is, however, a huge benefit for improving safety and the utility of your aircraft. JKG |

It isn't. The service is provided by a private enterprise (actually, two of them, XM and Baron Services), and is not required for use of the NAS. It is, however, a huge benefit for improving safety and the utility of your aircraft. FYI: We inquired about switching from one plan to another (there are two plans -- "Deluxe" for $49/month, and "Regular" for $29/month), and the XM Weather folks told us that you can switch back and forth easily, at will -- and at no charge. We're considering downgrading the service in the winter, when we rarely fly cross country flights. They also said you can turn the service off completely, without charge. This may be an option for those who don't fly in the winter. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

Sadly, Garmin's control of the market meant that they were able to dictate a hard-and-fast price of $2795 at OSH '06, no matter where you shopped or what you offered. A buddy of mine who worked at one of the avionics shops told me that Garmin would threaten his rights to sell their products if he under-cut the competition -- so, in effect, there wasn't any. I really resented Garmin's interference with the free market. Golf clubs, hockey skates, rollerblades, baseball gloves, etc --- they all do it, to a point. Nothing new. Montblack |

You can turn it off, but if you go past a certain grace period (60 or 90 days), you will get hit with the $75 activation fee when you want to turn it back on again. JKG |

Golf clubs, hockey skates, rollerblades, baseball gloves, etc --- they all do it, to a point. Nothing new. I know -- but it *is* new in Oshkosh. Distributors of Lowrance, AvMap (and many other) products were wheeling and dealing, while Garmin distributors weren't even allowed to give you a t-shirt for patronizing their booth. That sucks. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |
