Why?
EAU has scheduled passenger operations. A control tower is needed at all locations with scheduled passenger operations to prevent these aircraft from attempting to take off from surfaces that may be too short. Ooooo...that's cynical, Steven. But seriously, does air traffic in Eau Claire, WI merit a tower? I've not flown in there, but my sister attended college there (many moons ago), and it sure didn't appear to be a major metropolitan center. -- Jay Honeck Iowa City, IA Pathfinder N56993 www.AlexisParkInn.com "Your Aviation Destination" |

But I spoke with someone that is very familiar with the area about that tower not long ago, Duffy Gaier at nearby Marshfield. He doesn't think EAU merits a tower either. In fact, he told me someone took some serious heat, the airport manager I think but can't recall for sure, for slipping the control tower in to the terminal construction. I was surprised to learn yesterday that the tower is actually going to open. |

It's been many moons ago... but didn't EAU "used" to have a tower? I swear
when I was doing my student cross countries back in the '80s that I flew into EAU and the tower was operational. Or am I confusing it with the FSS that used to be at EAU? Anybody have a better memory than mine? BTW, isn't Duffy a real gem?! While we had our annual done on the Aztec at MFI he was simply a dynamo... one day I saw him on/in 4 different vehicles within 4 hours. He rode into the hanger on a motorcycle, left in a car, came back in a 182 that he had just purchased and then drove off on a tractor. The man is simply everywhere... and he's over 70 years old.
