How is the progress on your Bearhawk??

It's got to be much harder building from plans than from a
kit like I did. You certainly did pick an airplane suitable
for Alaskan flying, though...

Progress is slow and the excuses are several and valid. I'm currently
working on the wing spars but am rapidly approaching the point where I
have to locate an 8 foot brake with which to bend the spar webs.

No Jerry.... I can't remember.

In fact I can't remember the last time that you wrote
a flying or building story.

Perhaps you wouldn't mind refreshing my memory.

By the way are you supporting Mr. Ammeter's snotty comments
towards one of your fellow pilots and newsgroup contributors
or are you just taking another swipe at me.

That would be WIPE butt head

I didnt really take offense at all, being the previous poster. I must
admit that yea, I may have been a little short sighted, but I guess I
was looking in the context that if my goal was to get the aircraft to
Pickneyville then I would have made (or attempted) to make it happen if
it was safe to do so..

Yea.. its assuming, and presumptuous.. and I dont have a problem with
someone directly rebutting me

I too, thought the previous poster's reply a bit presumptuous, when telling
someone else to take a week off, and burn some gas.

It was well deserving a smart ass response.

If you were complementing snowbird, then, "nevermind" g

Thanks for the feedback... gives me something to think about when the
velocity gets airborne.

And, yea, I must admit my job situation is a little unique (but in
deference to others, NOT low pressure). I work as an ICU nurse in a
day-to-day setting, filling in holes in the nursing shortage. Gives lots
of freedom of scheduling, but the manner in which I work gives me no
vacation benefits.. If I take the time off, I have to absorb it. So,
taking a week off for OSH or Xmas means I'm making it up in the weeks
before or after.

Good luck getting the 40 flown off and enjoy your aircraft. At least
your FLYING.. right now I'm still itching from fiberglass construction.

Is such a waiver 1) common? 2) appropriate?

The type of waiver I requested, a ferry permit for
maintenance, is common. I don't know how common
it is to use this to get a one-time extension of a flight test
area, but I know it's been done and was what my DAR recomended.
Is it appropriate? Probably not for the sole purpose of
attending a fly-in, but there was an A&P there I wanted to
look at it and help troubleshoot some minor things.
It's ~50 miles outside of my flight test area. I asked
the local FSDO, and after the duty guy did some research
I got a cordial denial *with justification*. Not the
answer I hoped for, but one I could live with all the
same. It wasn't critical, and they did what they could to
help, so I didn't push it. After all, I may need *real*
help in the future, and they've been helpful in the past.

Any raspberry anyone heard at PJY over the issue did not come
from me.

I mean.. take a week of vacation and go burn some gas!!

Hehe. You're funny. If only it was that simple.

No offense taken. I had planned to have the hours
flown off in time for Pinckneyville, but a lot
has happened in the past few months and I haven't
been able to work on the airplane or fly it very
often. Right now my main priority is to get the
bugs worked out so I can ferry it to California
in June or July. What testing I have done has
been uneventful, and I should be able to get much
more time on it in the next few weeks. Attending PJY
was a luxury given my time constraints, but one
I wouldn't miss unless chained down.

One of the highlights of *my* Pinckneyville
experience was spending about 20 minutes on the
phone with Uncle Bob trying to soak up as much
as I could about flying RV's. I wish I'd taken notes.
There was also a *gorgeous* -4 that came over
from Carbondale, I picked the builder's brain
for a while and kept him and his son much later than
they really wanted to stay, I think.

I wanted one but my wife refuses to live in a house with a drawbridge.
When she asked what I wanted it for, "to go across the moat" did not
impress her. 8^) I have a couple of leads that I can pursue but have
been putting it off while I work on other things.

I'm glad you weren't offended, as that wasn't the intent.

I'm privledged to know Dave and to witness some of the early flights
of his plane, and I happen to know some of the constraints he's working
under (which are NOMB to discuss), which kept the attempts from full
success.

Most of us have multiple goals and we have to fight to balance them
out.

It's a beautiful plane, and well worth waiting for. And we at PJY got
to see another RV4, truly a gorgeous one, too.

Cheers,
Sydney

The 401st gathering of the Ilk took place at Pinckneyville
this weekend with thousands in attendence

Oh, wait, wrong website

Those of the Ilk who made it through or around the bad weather
(driving or flying) did meet and gather at Pinckneyville. snip

I found driving to be the best method. Dallas, TX - Ft. Smith, AR -
Springfield, MO,- Elgin, IL,- PVY...what could be simpler?

The company was wonderful, the kite flying was dangerous, the hospitality
was off the charts (as always)...I think I'll try to shorten the intervals
between my appearances; that's too much fun to wait 5 years to do again!

Whatever the real story is with Sydney/Youknowwho/John, you are totally
off base with your opinion of John. Unlike you, Mr. Ammeter is a real
person who possesses the strength of character to post using his own
name. He has built and flown his own homebuilt aircraft (again, unlike
you) and if you haven't seen him post useful information then you simply
haven't been paying attention. Furthermore, while I didn't agree with
his comment in this instance, I certainly don't need your help in
responding to him and I resent the tag team debating tactics which you
are trying to include me in. In other words, butt out.

I don't know what is the best John is capable of but I suspect it is
considerably better than anything you might have done. I do know that
when I was able to get out of Alaska for a while a few years ago, John
took the time to visit me at the flight school I was attending and spent
a good part of his day just talking with me about homebuilts and flying
in general. In the grand scheme of things that may not matter much but
for a young guy from rural Alaska surrounded by strange sights and way
more people than should ever live in close proximity to one another,
John provided a welcome break, some good building and flying advice, and
a chance to talk in real life with another homebuilder (in the town
where I am from, there were maybe 1-2 others, no EAA, and my computer
was my only real link to other like-minded individuals).

Del Rawlins-

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Everything you say about Ampmeter, Del, goes DOUBLE for me.

When I was looking to buy an RV-3, Trade-A-Plane had one
listed in the Seattle area. With a simple phone call from me half a
continent away, John Ammeter stepped up to the plate and helped
me out with his personal time and effort, and probably put more
than 100 miles on his car checking out that RV-3 in my behalf.
This is the one I fly today, more than 3 years later. You know...
the one that doesn't exist for some of the newbies and their ilk.

I'm proud to thank John once again here personally for the
time, effort and expense he incurred, unselfishly, for me.

As for Bernie, I don't know why he hangs here. Last I knew
he is not a pilot, builder or airplane owner. **** stirring seems
to be his forte'. A bit like me, I must admit. g
