Hollywood just jumped on the bandwagon.

Not to mention the media in general. Like global warming, it sells
newspapers and advertising time on TV.

The UFO sightings started about the same time we started testing advanced
aircraft. The USAF and the CIA were more than happy to use UFOs as a cover
for the testing.

Yes, but I suspect that such testing was only a token part of the UFO
delusions.
