... No news reader can show you posts that haven't arrived at your news server. But once they are all there, any competent newsreader can and will display them in the proper threaded order, primarily by using the References and Date fields. small change: But while the posts are still there, any competent.... Well, if you want to pick that nit... It really should read "but while the posts are still on the server, or saved on the user's computer, any competent..." Personally, I think either correction is getting beyond the original point, which is that the newsreader can and does maintain the correct order of the posts, regardless of their actual arrival time. There was a guy on one newsgroup I read who consistently broke threading. The X-Newsreader header indicated he used a newsreader that was capable of preserving the References header, but when questioned it turns out he was manually deleting that header (and a few others) because he didn't know what it was for. Like when I do this? I manually clean up the quoted text section, blue stuff and all. Montblack |

Montblack,
Like when I do this? Hmm. My newsreader is showing your message in perfect thread order. What am I missing? -- Thomas Borchert (EDDH) |

I have no idea what "blue stuff" means because I don't use the same newsreader as you. And I was talking about headers, not quoted text. I strongly encourage cleaning up quoted text, but leaving enough for context. -- Paul Tomblin http://xcski.com/blogs/pt/ ....would you work for a company that couldn't tell the difference in quality of its employees' normal work product and the work product of someone on drugs without performing a test? -- socks |

Not many newsreaders these days give you access to the news headers, and for good reason. The guy who was deleting them had just enough knowledge to be dangerous. -- Paul Tomblin http://xcski.com/blogs/pt/ "Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering ******; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I killfile thee; for hate's sake I spit my last post at thee! ![]() "C. Massey" wrote But when you do a "show all messages", you have to wade through so many unwanted threads and messages to see what you are looking for. Much easier if people would just quote... I have show all messages displayed, so I can go back and read more of a quoted post, or see what was way befor. I don't wade through posts, because I use the "next unread thread" button, added in the toolbar. Different strokes, and all..... -- Jim in NC |
