allowing guns in cockpits

Not all people have the mental fortitude and personal discipline to be competent with a firearm and be prepared to use it effectively to defend themselves or another person. For them, alternatives are better. For that segment of society who have obtained a CCW permit, i.e. have a clean criminal and mental bill of health & have taken time for required training and discipline, the fact remains that they overwhelmingly have a spotless record in terms of not committing crimes and even saving lives and stopping criminals. I know of one case where a CCW holders permit was revoked for misuse: a retired police officer (whose permit was issued automatically in accordance to state CCW law by, virtue of his being a retired police officer) who shot up a hospital ward in an attempt to kill his ex-wife. It occurred several years ago (circa 1995) in Mesa, Arizona. |

But mostly... the people who have CCW permits are subjected to an extremely high degree of background scrutiny... and they have to pay for the privilege. You won't really find too many nut-jobs or gang-bangers willing to apply for one. |

CCW laws still are aimed at those not inclined towards criminal behavior. |

The scrutiny and costs are directly proportional to the population density of your county, at least in the western US. |

See the first picture at http://arthurshall.com/x_2007_manly_firearms.shtml .
