Default Bad Month for Flying

Guess our winter starts earlier than yours, the Met. Office here defines
winter as December 1st to the end of Feb. So winter's already been going
a while here. Still hasn't got below freezing yet, and is about 10
celcius today (upper 40s F, I guess)... and we're further north than the
entire continental US :-)

Yep, meteorological winter (really, the only one that counts) starts
on December 1st. But just TRY to get everyone to agree to change the
date on the calendar! (Look how hard it was to get any movement at
all on "Daylight Savings Time"...)

Although it hasn't been above freezing there, I'll bet the dampness of
living on an island is impressive. Having grown up on the shores of
Lake Michigan, I do *not* miss that weather. (I swear, 40 degrees
there felt as cold as 20 degrees in bone-dry Iowa...)

Well... yesterday,I went flying for the first time since returning from
AirVenture '07.

No way! How'd *that* happen? (Mary says to give you crap, and asks
that I remind her not to fly with *you* into OSH '08... :-)

The past two weeks, central Ohio has been unscathed by severe weather.
Each of the four big storms that hit the Plains have passed north into
Michigan or south then east into Pennsylvania.
It's good to be a Buckeye! :-))

You've been lucky. Montblack and I were discussing that this winter
is starting out JUST like the record winter of '77-'78, with ice/snow
every couple-three days. We've already got 12' piles in the parking
lots!

(For those of you who remember the sweltering heat at our fly-in pool
party(s), picture the pool covered and coated in ice and snow, with
that huge cover depressed over 5 feet in the middle, and 3' drifts all
'round. It's hard to believe it ever gets so hot here that you can't
bear it...)

Yes... when the wind blows, it feels bloody cold. We call it a 'lazy
wind' - it's so lazy, it can't be bothered to blow around you, it blows
right through you instead, chilling you to the core!

In Milwaukee this wind was usually combined with a bone-chilling mist,
to ensure complete hypothermia...
