Hull Insurance

In the course of researching one day buying an aircraft, insurance is
a big factor. I happened upon Austin Meyer's X-Plane site where in his
adventure page, he talks about the value of buying hull insurance.

He makes a good point.

Just wondering how many people carry hull insurance on Cirrus's or
Columbia's, where the premiums are so high, or on any plane for that
matter. If you've been flying for years without a mishap, was it worth
the cost?

I'm far from an expert on insurance, but in my opinion, that's just the
wrong way to look at it. You don't want to consider the value of the
insurance in the event of never having any problems. Rather, you need
to ask what you will need in the event of an accident.

If you can afford the loss of the airplane yourself, then you may not
need hull coverage. I would guess that most cannot afford to *not* have
it.

I would be surprised if there are any Cirrus's without hull insurance.
I've known a few guys with Aeronca's of J-3's in the past that did
not carry insurance but even in those planes (under $15,000 at the
time) they were considered odd balls. I would never consider not
having insurance on my Mooney.
I had a claim last year. I was parked in front of my hotel room in
Mexico and some guy backed his truck into my aileron. My good piloting
skills didn't help me as I watched him back into the plane from my
hotel room.

Anything that has a loan out on it will require hull insurance to
minimally cover the amount of the note.

Another reason not to visit Mexico. The guy probably didn't have
insurance or for that matter even a drivers license..

Yup... I am prejudice................-

Only am American would hit your plane in Mexico. Americans have
insurance and just pay their premium. If a Mexican had hit me he'd
probably still be in jail. Mexicans are much more careful drivers
because they have serious consequences for accidents. In anycase my
policy paid it before collecting his insurance. Nearly all US policies
include Mexico and Canada in their territory (although they'll try to
sell you an additional suppliment but it doesn't change your hull
insurance in anyway).

airplane belongs to the insurance company when the engine quits you can
concentrate on saving yourself and your passengers and not take risks trying
to avoid damaging the plane.

I used to live in Alaska, and up there the vast majority of aircraft don't have insurance. Especially "bush planes". With the cost of insurance sometimes costing 25% of the hull value few can afford it. Many people won't carry any passengers other than their family, and don't even carry liabilty ins. I never carried hull while I was up there, but I did have liabilty. Money wise I am definately way ahead with no hull insurance.
