{EXCERPT} September issue of Airman available

SAN ANTONIO (AFPN) * Read about Airmen living and working at the Air
Force’s headquarters in Iraq, learn how one Airman inspires young burn
survivors and discover the coldest classroom on earth. These features
and more highlight the September issue of Airman magazine, now
available in print and online at

Building a Better Iraq Airmen at Balad Air Base, Iraq, live under the
constant threat of mortar, rocket and small arms attacks, while
enduring the brutal summer heat. Still, they serve with little
complaint or fanfare. Instead, they keep a steady focus on their
mission to bring in needed supplies and counter the constant threat of
insurgents.

More than Airmen Military members crossing the line to work with the
other services isn’t anything new. The U.S. military has been doing it
since the Civil War. Sometimes it does take some getting used to. But
more Airmen are discovering themselves stepping out of the blue and
into the “purple.”

Don’t Cry for Me Badly scarred in a horrific fire at age 4, Airman 1st
Class Brandon Lee turned hardship into inspiration volunteering at a
camp for burn survivors. He relates to their situation and gained
their respect.

Balad: Three Players, One Goal Joint warfare works at Balad Air Base,
Iraq, where Airmen, Marines and Soldiers are helping bring Iraq peace
and stability. And they’re finding it’s practical and fun, too.

Extreme Academics It may be the “coolest” school on earth. From
building snow shelters to lighting fires, Airmen and NATO troops are
learning valuable survival skills in this Alaskan classroom.
