Default AWOS but no METAR (Clarion County, PA KAXQ)

Clarion County (KAXQ) in western Pennsylvania has a comissioned
AWOS-3 that transmits on 118.275. However there is no METAR
report available for the field.

Is there any particular reason why this is so? It seems a waste
to have a functional weather reporting device that can't
contribute its information the national weather system.

KFCI is the same way. Maybe the 9600 baud connection is too expensive to
set up.

You can look up its direct phone number in the Airport/Facility Directory.

Or a handy phone number is ANYAWOS (877-269-2967) which will connect you to
any AWOS phone number in the U.S.

Oh sure, you can listen to the AWOS via phone as well as radio, but METAR
reports would be useful too, both for planning purposes and for the people who
benefit from current weather information. Since they already have (inbound)
phone service for the AWOS, I wonder why they don't have the capability for it
to dial out once an hour or so and send a quick report to the national weather
system.
