Hi,

For some reason I have recently only been able to post to r.a.s. via
Google Groups, although I can still post to the UK equivalents through
gliderpilot.net. This started at the time of the Scam email from
Nigeria. Has my email address for some reason been added to the Spam
folder for gp.net r.a.s.? Or is there a technical problem? I get the
message that my posting will appear in about 15 minutes, but it never
appears! Andy please help?

work, either. Will see if it works this time.

Grab a decent newsreader and see how you get on with direct posting.
Good ones a

Windows: Free Agent http://www.forteinc.com/
Linux: Pan http://pan.rebelbase.com/

Both are free, so just download, set up and play.

I briefly checked out Forte, it's no longer free. They give a short-
period trial of their software.

If you have a Windoze box, you probably already have Outlook Express. I
know some turn up their nose at it, but it works just fine for me. For free
access to an NNTP server, try
http://www.eternal-september.org/ See my sig for other possibilities.

Nothing personal, but if you are posting through Google Groups I may not
receive
your message. Google refuses to control the flood of spam messages
originating
in their system, so on any given day I may or may not have Google blocked.
Try
a real NNTP server & news reader program and you will never go back. All
you
need is access to an NNTP server (AKA "news server") and a news reader
program.
You probably already have a news reader program in your computer (Hint:
Outlook
Express). Assuming that your Usenet needs are modest, use
http://www.cnntp.org/
and/or, http://news.aioe.org/ and/or http://www.motzarella.org/ and/or
https://www.x-privat.org/index.php for free, and/or
http://www.teranews.com/ for a one-time $3.95 setup fee. Newsguy,
http://www.newsguy.com/ offers a variety of reasonably priced services. If
you
wish to experiment with real Usenet access, they will give you a free 2-day
trial account.

Might still be worth trialling it to see how you get on with a dedicated
newsreader. I always used the non-free version because its excellent
killfile facilities were disabled in the free version.

I said 'used' because I no longer use Windows, so my newsreader of choice
is now Pan. I tried Thunderbird (also available for Windows) but didn't
like it much as of somewhat over a year ago: it may have improved since
then.

Yes, but why can't I just post directly to gliderpilot.net, as I have
always been able to do in the past, and still can on uras?
Incidentally I have tried a couple more postings and they still are
not getting through.

r.a.s and u.r.a.s are quite different animals though I understand they
look the same on gliderpilot.net.

u.r.a.s is purely a web forum hosted on the gliderpilot.net website.
AFAIK it can't be accessed except via gliderpilot.net and probably
consists of a message database on that website plus programs that allow
it to be accessed from a web browser.

r.a.s is an Internet newsgroup that exists and operates independently of
any web site though it is mapped onto a webforum-like display by
gliderpilot.net, google groups and (probably) a few other websites. Posts
to it are shipped between newsgroup servers by using the NNTP protocol
much the same as e-mail is shipped between mail servers with the SMTP
protocol. The only major difference is that posts on newsgroups are
broadcast to all news servers while e-mail messages are sent only to the
mail server(s) that support the recipient(s).

Judging by what you say there's a problem in the depths of
gliderpilot.net that affects its ability to access r.a.s and any other
newsgroups it is subscribed to. Tell gliderpilot.net there's a problem
with r.a.s and ask them to fix it.
