Default oil and length of time for break-in

Hi everyone. I have been running straight SAE 40 mineral oil since I had a
cylinder replaced. That was about 15 hours ago. My A&P says that I should
think about switching to AD now. The general wisdom has been that switching
to AD after break-in should be done after 25 to 50 hours.

Since only one cylinder has been off, I don't think I would notice a
difference in oil consumption when the rings on the new cylinder are seated.
Should I just make the switch now or wait a bit longer?

Thanks

Matt

You're going to ignore you mech for our advice?

Since it was just one cylinder, I vote with him.

Aw, okay....."him/her"

Ignore? No. But I am sure there are as many opinions on this issue as
there are A&Ps. Just looking to bounce his idea off of others.

Compression? Appearance of plug? Exhaust stack on that side?

Understood. The lower plug on that cylinder had fouled out with oil past
the rings after about 2 hours. Cleaned and replaced. Since then there has
been no problem.

Have not done a compression check since I do not have the equipment.

Thanks for your input.

Well I think it would be okay but if you have a high oil consumption,
suggesting it isn't sufficiently broken in, then you will be changing
back. Is oils consumptions stable??? At least 500 hrs on your engine?

Depends to some extent on cylinder walls - Chrome often doesn't seat
until 25+.

I'd follow your mechanic's advice, but would still use high power
settings to make sure everything seats properly.

follow the manufacturers recommendation.
What I've read lately it doesn't make any difference.
Use whatever makes you feel good!!
