Default MOST UGLY GLIDER ?

The 1978 edition of 'Jane's World Sailplanes and Motor
Gliders' by Andrew Coates, does not have any 'ugly'
gliders. Some look a lot better than others, but no
truly 'ugly' gliders. Ok, the 2-33 comes close, but
I won't call it 'ugly.'

Maybe a truly 'ugly' glider is one not cared for and
not flown.

Now, 'ugly' trailers are easier to pick out!

I saw a Cherokee II on wingsandwheels once. It looked like it was
covered in vinyl siding.

I live in the home of the Cherokee and that glider does them no
justice. Particularly if you consider that they believe their mountains
were created by the wingtips of a great soaring bird.

Getting off-topic, for many years Hall wrote a column for Soaring
Magazine called Homebuilders Hall. He also wrote many articles for SHAp
Talk, the newsletter of the Sailplane Homebuilders Association (now
called the Experimental Soaring Association). The ESA currently sells
the collected works of Stan Hall in a two-volume set. Most of them
describe aspects of aeronautical engineering in terms that most
sailplane pilots can understand, appreciate, and apply. Some of the
articles describe Hall's adventures in Vietnam, supporting th Q-star
reconniassance airplanes then under development, and his later role in
developing the YO-3A airplanes for which he holds the design patent.

I really miss the "Homebuilders Hall" articles that appeared in Soaring
magazine. The collected works mentioned above sits on my library self and
is referred to often.

If anyone is interested in purchasing the set, an order form can be found at

Anyone seen a PIK-5?

In the vintage class, this may not be the prettiest glider of all times?

In the early years of our club, one was made (OH-PAX, built during
1948-1952, sold in the early 1960's).

Well if we are going to consider the context in which the particular
gliders were designed.. you can correct me if I am wrong, but I do
believe the entire PW line (including the PW5) was designed by
Engineering STUDENTS in the Warsaw Polytechnic and not by a professional
design bureau. PZL and now The Glider Factory in Jezow were/are
producing the glider but did not design it. As far as it's two
competitors for the world class the SZD-51and the AC4, the Junior is
definitely a very pretty and great flying bird, but I don't think the
Russia will win any beauty contests (IMHO)... either way, i would
rather fly any of these three, or the Cherokee II or the Woodstock for
that matter.. instead of sitting here on the ground wishing it was spring
