Default Subaru 2.0L

wouldn't that be a nice starting point for an aircraft engine?

A flat torque curve until 2500 RPM and about 90HP, seems perfect for a
direct drive. One of the questions may be if the prop/hub will suffer by the
string power pulses of the diesel? Wonder what the stripped-down engine
weight is.
