Default Format for stopover flight plan

Does anyone know the correct format for a stopover VFR flight plan? Many of
us often have a single flight with a stopover for fuel. I have never tried
to file a stopover. I also understand the FAA guys aren't that familiar
with it and often don't understand what you are trying to do and it is
easier to just file two flight plans.

Or just build in the expected time on the ground in the flight plan.

Add a xx-minute delay at following the waypoint in the flightplan.

I had thought about this, but thought the FSS guy balk at an ETE of 5 hours
with 3 hours of fuel onboard :-)

So it's not just a fuel stop, you're going to lunch too.

And speaking of stopovers in flight plans (well actually *writing*
of them), what about making a position call (either in the air or from
the ground). Do they want these? Would be useful should a search be
needed.

Total time in the air is 4:30 with a 30 minute stop for fuel. ETE to final
destination is 5 hours.

I don't think it matters whether they want them or not. If it's a
long flight, particularly with stop-over, make the reports; it's your
butt it'll save.

Before getting the Instrument Rating, I used to just file a separate
plan for each leg. Now I usually file IFR for cross-country because
then they always know where you are.

You can file a 2 part flight plan. Just tell then in the beginning
when you file that you want to do that. I allow 15 mins between the
2. I have even cancelled in the air due to not needing to stop. when
i cancelled I just asked the to pick up my next one then. Enjoy

Why would you want to postpone the initiation of SAR processes for 5:00 + 1:00 (SOP) when most events that make you "late" happen within just a few miles of the departure or destination airports? If you file a 5 hour stopover flight plan, it will be at least 6 hours before anyone starts seriously looking for you - and you may be down within the first 20 minutes or so. If you filed two flight plans, you might cut your waiting time in half, so why not file two flight plans? It's not like we're paying by the plan (yet).

I've heard the excuse that the stopover will be at a self-service fuel site and they pilot didn't want to have to close and reopen. That is a silly excuse because you may not even have the advantage of someone verifying that you actually made your first point of intended landing. Then SAR forces have to look at the entire route rather than just the first segment.

I'm not real sure I can find a solid reason (not an excuse) to file stopover flight plans personally, but then I realize this is a personal preference.
