Ashes to ashes...
ladies and gents,
a question came to my mind: Are gliders (and towplanes) also affected by the UK airspace closures due to the volcanic ashes? Cheers Andreas |

Looks that even de birds are grounded ;-) Not quite: H0927/10 has closed EGTT (London) FIR completely to IFR SFC to FL 195 until 16/04/2010 12:00 but says that: "VFR OPR SHOULD EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION AND MUST ASSURE THEMSELVES THAT THEIR INTENDED FLIGHT CAN BE CONDUCTED IN A SAFE MANNER BEFORE FLYING. THEY SHOULD NOTE THAT ATSOCAS CAPACITY MAY BE SEVERELY LIMITED DURING THE PERIOD." -- martin@ | Martin Gregorie gregorie. | Essex, UK org | |

Most of the Dutch think that the world ends at the Dutch border ;-) |

Flying at Lasham Yesterday... Could this be an opportunity for a goal flight into Heathrow? Perhaps with an aerotow retrieve? Or maybe just the ultimate wave window over the UK? Have fun ;-) Ian |

Cheers Andreas I didn't hear anybody complaining when Mt St. Helens went ballistics years ago! I was working out of Lumby BC Canada with a Bell 214-B1 at the time. We were grounded because of all of the ash in the air. Very detrimental to a turbo-shaft engine and those big rotor blades (all engine of course and props/rotor blades) - compressor/turbine erosion. It took several compressor washes to clear the turbine/bleed band even after it was all clear to fly. You ever had a heavy lift helicopter swap ends on you because of a compressor stall? I have. The trains that came through Lumby were loaded with the ash and I still have a baby food jar with some. The BBC is reporting that this will halt "GLOBAL WARMING" for a while. "GLOBAL WARMING" my dying *ss!!!!! Europe, quit your bitching and grow up. It's a planet and you can't control it and neither can Al "the global warming, Nobel prize winning liar" Gore! And, oh by the way, it's not Icelands fault. Give me another rum and I'll tell you what I really think. With great regards, Jim |

Ashes to ashes...
Enough whining, lets see opportunities taken. How about this one:
A Stemme pilot posted a video of thermaling over the runways at Frankfurt, not normally possible. Jim http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17clkkKyIwc |

The airspace is closed, from the surface. :-( Neighboring nations seem quite happy to fly VFR, and enjoy vast regions of unused airspace. See the OLC-Alps: 9 flights over 700km, on saturday. No flights originating from the Italian territory. Aldo Cernezzi |
