Mmmm. Well, I am a 70 yo geezer who subscribes to a very good news
reader and I can't tell the difference between yenc and jpeg. I don't
even look at the format. My only complaint is the incessant whining
about yenc. No one is making anyone switch to yenc. If you can not
open it, so be it. Continue to open those pics you can see. As far
as wasted bandwidth, well, threads like this and all the previous
****ing contests don't really help, do they?

Dave,

I really regret that you don't understand what I was saying. Surely at your
age (not too far from mine BTW), you have peers who struggle with computers.
Are you advocating that we just leave them behind like the others are
insisting we do?

At our ages, you and I are an exception - not a norm.

And I hit 60 in a few days. I also challenge the notion that age has
much to do with it, A lot of kids today may use technology that is
unfamiliar to us, uh, advanced middle-aged folk, but their
understanding of the workings of that technology is often limited to
not much more than knowing where the power switch is.

Dave,

I really regret that you don't understand what I was saying. Surely at your
age (not too far from mine BTW), you have peers who struggle with computers.
Are you advocating that we just leave them behind like the others are
insisting we do?

At our ages, you and I are an exception - not a norm.

I see Don is repeating that same nonsense implying force. I never
insisted on anything. Yes, you need yEnc decoding to see my pictures,
but you also need a newsreader, and a computer. So even if I didn't
use yEnc, I'd be leaving behind those who lacked that hardware and
software. Perhaps I should just print my pictures and snailmail them
out to all! Otherwise I'm "forcing" them to either buy a computer or
be "left behind."

The notion of "struggle" is also phony. Downloading Agent and
clicking "install" is hardly a struggle. "Struggle" is what I did
this morning after I installed a different firewall and found that I
could not get Windows to load--that took some computer experience,
time, and liberal use of profanity directed at Zone Alarm, Webroot,
and Microsoft. There's no struggle in getting yEnc decoding at
all--at least not the way I did it. As I've pointed out before, I
knew very little about yEnc until the brouhaha on this group, and you
don't need to understand it one bit to use it--in fact, it is no more
complicated than the UU encoding one person erroneously referred to as
"basic."

About the only thing that can be said for sticking with UU encoding
only is that it was the way things had always been done. I am totally
impatient with that attitude, and I expect that I always will be no
matter how old I live to be. I like new things, I like progress.

And the idea that such attitudes are the exception in older folks is
just flat-out ageism. Don's claim would provoke laughter at our local
senior center (which is fully computer-equipped).

I'm giving Don the "straw man creation" prize.

WHAT is so flippen difficult in reading/opening yenc files?
Yes, I don't particularly like them, but it is SO easy to download
and save them in OE, and then decoding with 3rd party software.
And this from about six years back already, when I started net
surfing. Heck, anything that saves bandwidth in this retard country
of mine, is a bonus.
Maybe, just maybe, slow down on the ranting and raving, and
discreetly ask for help, draws less attention to one's shortcomings,
I learnt that the embarrassing way :-)

Hi, Buffy !

Perhaps I can explain the problem to you since you don't seem to be of
the same brash ilk as the bombastic group of kids who charged into
this group and exiled our most prolific and congenial long-term
posters.

There is nothing wrong with yEnc. Mr. Noise explained it very well -
if a person is a user of many newsgroups and downloads media files,
e-books and other large files then something like yEnc is nearly
mandatory. On the other hand, this is a still picture group where the
file sizes rarely exceed 300KB. A file that size will download with
yEnc in about 10 seconds on a DSL connection, around 12 seconds
without yEnc. Two seconds may be an eternity for an impetuous
youngster but it is totally insignificant in this newsgroup. Step up
to cable service and differences in D/L time become almost
immeasurable.

With that said, the real reason(s) for the regular members here
wanting to ban yEnc is that some are TOO OLD to understand how to
install ANY kind of software on their computers. Some are (or were,
before they bailed) barely able to use email and read this newsgroup.
So, should we just tell them to fuddle off or upgrade? I doubt if the
invaders would tell their own grandparents to F-off but for some
reason they don't hesitate to tell those here to do the same.

This is a global group of people who share the same love for aviation
photos. The older members have provided a wealth of historical
information regarding vintage aircraft, their experiences in various
wars, and have been most generous by providing priceless information
of a historical nature. Some of these same people are embarrassed to
reveal a lack of skill using a computer and will simply leave to avoid
the insolence of some snot-nosed kid who tells them to get out of the
dark ages and upgrade to *their* standards.

This is why a large amount of time was invested here to hammer out a
usage guideline that would be agreeable to all regardless of their
computer skills.

Is this too difficult to understand?

gdp

In the time you have written the above epistel you could have
downloaded, installed and be up and running Xnews TWICE. With fewer
keyhits and fewer mouse clicks.
This is NOT difficult and if you are not sure how to there are people
around here that are very willing to walk you through it.

A friend of mine lives on a farm here in the netherlands and is, to his
own disgust, still dependant on dial-up connection. On top of that he
has up- and down load limits. So for these people (and there are more of
them than you can imagine) please keep your posts as small as you can.

I know I will.

Good morning Bert-Jan,

Concerns of those much like your dial-up constrained friend have always been
accommodated by the regulars in this newsgroup. Every request for a re-post
of a smaller version (or a larger version for that matter) of an original
posting has been honored. It's only a matter of mutual respect.

Thank you for your observations and comments.

Smug re-invented and expanded ! For starters, you insisted that the

Yes, you need yEnc decoding to see my pictures,

Gee, the senior centers here are fully equipped with giant checkers and
dominoes. Where are these centers? Are they LAN wired in each room or are
they wi-fi equipped?

I'm giving Don the "straw man creation" prize.

Thanks but I don't believe you are sanctioned to award prizes. I would
offer you one but it appears you are your own best prize.

Noise, why don't you just join this group on its own terms and try to enjoy
the camaraderie? Who knows, you may make some valuable friends, including
myself. I just refuse to stand and salute when you enter the room.

Oh, so they should be "forced" to settle for a smaller version just
because someone can't use more efficient encoding (and that's what
yEnc is)? (I think that's how you'd phrase it if you were on the yEnc
side, Don--I'm just trying to do an imitation.)

Just *how* are we leaving *anyone* behind? They can open it or not.
No one is forcing anyone to change their computer, software, or news
reader. If they feel that they are losing out on lots of pictures,
great picture I might add, then they can get a decent news reader
instead of Outlook Depressed, or down-load software that will allow
them to read yenc. It is a no-brainer.

I once had a miserable news reader. I couldn't see anything except
jpg. Then, thankfully, that news reader stopped access to news groups
and I was forced to find another. I chose Giganews and was amazed at
what I was missing.
