Air Force announces small diameter bomb contract award

(EXCERPT) PRESS RELEASE -- Secretary of the Air Force, Directorate of
Public Affairs

Release No. 1009035 Oct 9, 2003

Air Force announces small diameter bomb contract award

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Air Force announced today McDonnell Douglas, a
wholly owned subsidiary of the Boeing Co., St. Louis, was awarded a
$151.6 million contract for the System Development and Demonstration
(SDD) phase of the Small Diameter Bomb (SDB) weapon system.

This announcement follows one day after the SDB program successfully
completed the Defense Acquisition Board's Milestone B decision review
chaired by the undersecretary of defense for Acquisition, Technology,
and Logistics.

The Air Force intends to buy 24,000 SDB weapons and 2,000 carriage
systems. The total SDD phase program value is $188.3 million which
includes the contract face value, award fee and test.

The SDB weapon system consists of a 250-pound class munition, a
carriage system, an accuracy support infrastructure, associated
mission planning and logistics support. The SDB, designed to be
compatible with the majority of Air Force fighters and bombers, is
capable of significant standoff ranges against fixed and stationary
relocatable targets. SDB increases weapons loadout, allowing more
kills per sortie than current inventory weapons and has an effective,
day/night, adverse weather, stand-off capability.

The Lethal Strike Joint Program Office, Air Armament Center, Eglin Air
Force Base, Fla., manages the SDB program. McDonnell Douglas intends
to perform SDD activities at their St Charles, Mo., facility.
