Stupid question about birds and planes

Can't grilles be placed in front of jet air intakes to stop seagulls
killing engines?

Yes and No

If the grill is heavy enough you can stop a bird it will get shredded
and the bits will go through the engine However that heavy of a grill
and you wont get enough air flow as for a light grill Imagine a bird at
500mph hitting it The bird would go right through the grill so no benifit.
