Default Refinish and Repair ASW19 and Russia

Am looking for templates for Wortmann airfoils or stations matrix.

Also need a repair manual for an AC4 Russia (tail cone damage).

Thanks. Jim Rizzo

Here's the Wortmann data, Jim:

Can't help you with the AC-4 requirement.

From the perspective of this amateur composite glider builder:

My guess is that the basic repair techniques are as covered in the
Ursula Hanle PPPPP book. Contact Brad Hill and ask if he knows the
laminate schedule for the area of interest - he used to be the US
dealer for Russia kits. You can also learn a lot from the repair
manuals of the Big 3, some of which are on their Web sites.

You can core sample the affected area with a holesaw and burn it (the
core sample, not the glider) to get rid of the epoxy (wear a
respirator!). That lets you pick apart the glass layers and get an
idea of the fiber orientations and weights. Be sure and keep track of
the orientation of the sample before and after the burn so you don't
have to do it twice. If there's foam core (there probably is on the
Russia), scrape it out before the burn - it's probably PVC foam, which
I think liberates chlorine gas when burned. That's bad, you don't want
to be exposed to the fumes and a respirator won't filter them out.

From what I've heard of the Russia operation, they were relatively
casual about materials. My bet is that you'll find that the basic
glass is 92125 or similar, with a veil of 91110 under the gelcoat.
Looking at the glass cloth reference in the old ASW repair manual, it
looks like 92125 is similar if not same-same to the 7725 that's common
in the US.

The epoxy might be MGS 285, which you can get from Williams Soaring.
Epoxy chemistry being what it is, it's more likely a less expensive
Russian equivalent based on Epon 815c or 832 resin. Regardless, the
MGS is the nicest stuff to work with, so unless you need mondo gallons
of epoxy I'd suggest sticking with that.

Good luck!

Thanks, Bob K.

Jim:

I know that Chris Klix of Pacific Aerosport had repaired a Russia tail
cone a couple of years ago and is familiar with the layup schedule of
the fuselage. It does contain foam core. Chris would probably be
able to give you some advice about this. http://www.pacificaerosport.com
