Questions about aerobatics
These should be in the FAQ:
(1) Can a PPL do aerobatics? If another certification is required what are the hourly flight minimums in an aero aircraft? (2) What is the difference between the wing-on-top aerobats like the Decathlon and the low-wing types like Extra 300 and Cap-232? (3) Where can I rent a Cap 231/232/10? (4) Are there larger aerobatic airplanes that can carry say 3 or 5 passengers? (5) Are there any jet aerobatic aircraft? If so, how are they different? (6) Can a defanged F-16 be classified as an aerobat? Is there a similar aircraft? (7) Can you fly around an aerobatic airplane like other airplanes between normal airports and do aerobatics anywhere you can fly normal airplanes (given youre above the minimum altitude)? Can you do aerobatics over superbowl? Informed answers will be appreciated... and TIA |

"Ghazan Haider" wrote in message oups.com... These should be in the FAQ: (1) Can a PPL do aerobatics? If another certification is required what are the hourly flight minimums in an aero aircraft? Yes, a PPL can do aerobatics and no additional ratings or licenses are required. It's not a good idea to do it without proper training from a qualified instructor and you have to use an airplane that is certified for aerobatics. Aerobatics put stresses on aircraft that normal A to B flying doesn't and, therefore need to have additional structural strength. (2) What is the difference between the wing-on-top aerobats like the Decathlon and the low-wing types like Extra 300 and Cap-232? Performance based on the aircraft, but there's no real difference between high and low wing until you get into the higher end. The ultimate aerobatic aircraft for over 20 years was the Pitts Special biplane, but it was eclipsed in performance in the early 80s by monoplane designs like Sukhois and Extras. Some models of Su and Extra have the wing mounted mid-fuselage rather than high or low so that it is mounted on the centerline of the airplane for sharper performance. The big limiters for an airplane like the Decathalon is it's engine power and the amount of drag on the fuselage and wing struts. (3) Where can I rent a Cap 231/232/10? Depends on where you live. (4) Are there larger aerobatic airplanes that can carry say 3 or 5 passengers? The Yak-18 is a 4 place tourer that is cleared for aerobatics but I don't know if you can carry passengers while doing them. Others here may know the airplane better than I do. (5) Are there any jet aerobatic aircraft? If so, how are they different? Most military trainers and all fighters are, by definition, aerobatic. They are different in that they are faster and require more sky for their maneuvers, plus they cannot do some of the gyroscopic maneuvers that a propellor-driven airplane can do. Most are also limited in some maneuvers because it might cause reverse flow into the engine (tailslides, for instance) (6) Can a defanged F-16 be classified as an aerobat? Is there a similar aircraft? Not sure what you're after here but the F-16 is one of the most highly maneuverable aircraft in the world, but it still can't do some things a Pitts can do. (7) Can you fly around an aerobatic airplane like other airplanes between normal airports and do aerobatics anywhere you can fly normal airplanes (given youre above the minimum altitude)? Can you do aerobatics over superbowl? You can fly aerobatic airplanes cross-country (after all, you have to be able to get to competitions and airshows). In fact, I and 6 mates just spent the weekend flying from London to Dijon to Lille and back. You can do aerobatics in any uncontrolled airspace (at least in the US and the UK) but there are restrictions about doing them over built-up and populated areas and there are sensible altitude restrictions. You can't do aerobatics over a crowd, like the Superbowl, unless you have a display authorization from the FAA and the organizers have cleared the aerobatic display with the FAA. Same goes for the UK. Informed answers will be appreciated... and TIA Hope this helped. Shawn |

Hope this helped.
Sure did. Thanks. (3) Where can I rent a Cap 231/232/10? Depends on where you live. Toronto. Do they rent these or the extra 300 ANYWHERE in N America, or preferably Canada? What aircraft did you do the X-C in? |

Sure, you can rent Extras and Caps for instruction; I don't know about
renting them solo. I think if you Google something like Aerobatic Instruction, you'll come up with something. We did our cross country in Pitts Specials, mine specifically is a Pitts S-1D. If you are ever in California see Attitude Aviation in Livermore.
They have an Extra 200, Grob 115, Pitts, Decatholon, and a T6. The owner is a retired U2 Air Force Pilot. They specialize in aerobatics and unusual attitude training. |
