I got a cheap radio shack airplane scanner. It works great when I sit in

the
airport parking lot but 5 km out it does nothing. I live about 15 km from

a
small airport and 40 from Pearson Internation Airport. Is there a external
antenna I can clip on to this thing to boost its receiving capabilites?

It's important to have a visual path between the transmitter and
receiver, so antenna height is part of the issue. Here's something
you should find interesting:

Now how about answering one for me. Why did you find it necessary to
cross post your inquiry to the binary newsgroups?

Just remember, VHF comm is line of site. If you can't see it, you can't
hear it (well sort of). I can't hear the tower on the airfield sometimes
with the large hangars in the way. Our TX antennae are less than 50 feet
above the ground, often less than 20. You should have no problem picking
up aircraft, though.

I have the same problem with the Unicom at the local field, but not
because of the hangars. The lads in the shack turn it down so as not
to interrupt their cribbage game.
