Does anyone have any information on whether Garmin is planning terrain
data for Garmin 430 and whether it will be upgradable in a current installation. |

Endre,
Does anyone have any information on whether Garmin is planning terrain data for Garmin 430 and whether it will be upgradable in a current installation. Yes and yes. It's supposed to come out this year. It will require your unit to be sent to Garmin. Cost was said to be around 1500 $. -- Thomas Borchert (EDDH) |

The Garmin rep at the Arlington Fly-in said that there are two upgrades to the 430/530 this year. One is the $1500 WAAS upgrade (that included a newer, faster processor) and the terrain avoidance upgrade that was available for $500. It was not clear to me that the terrain upgrade depended upon the WAAS upgraded, although that is what I would expect. The display updates are slow enough already without the added terrain data. -- Frank Stutzman Bonanza N494B "Hula Girl" Hood River, OR |

Frank,
The display updates are slow enough already without the added terrain data. Some people have told me that a processor upgrade would be included in the WAAS upgrade. -- Thomas Borchert (EDDH) |

Unfortunately, they don't seem to have any plans to update the 4xx/5xx to provide the higher resolution and color depth necessary to properly support terrain info. Can you imagine the 296's or G1000's terrain display on the 4xx/5xx? That would be something to behold. Heck, I think I could justify a second 430 if that were the case. But, then again, silly me. This is the publically-traded Garmin we're talking about. They're too busy buying up their competition, telling their dealers how much profit they can make, or making up stupid excuses why they can't STC the G1000 suite, to actually do what their customers want.
