Default Announcing - 2019 Logan XC/OLC Mountain Flying Camp

Event Dates: 8/11/2019 - 8/17/2019
We are excited to announce the opportunity to come enjoy and fly Logan, Utah in an OLC/XC Mountain flying camp the second week of August 2019. This camp is limited to 35 gliders and is best suited for more experienced XC pilots who have already had some mountain/ridge flying experience. We are about half way filled up so you still have an opportunity to get in!

Logan is an amazing, more technical soaring site that acts as a jumping point to fly into many Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah mountain ranges. Logan is a good size college town with dozens of excellent restaurants in town and many things to do for crew during the day. This fully organized soaring event comes with retrieve office, daily morning pilots' meetings with weather, optional daily task(s), OLC flight awards, and evening dinners/events.

Plan on lower stress launching - there are no restrictions on tow heights so you don't have to worry about being dropped off low on the mountain side and scratching like during a contest. GPS tracker registered with SSA tracking service is mandatory. PowerFlarm is encouraged but not mandatory. Pilots are welcome to come and fly early if you have flown Logan before. If not, a mandatory pilot's orientation meeting will be held the morning of the first event day.

For more information and to register, visit: https://www.ssa.org/Contests?cid=2445

Hope to fly with you in August!

We have about a dozen spots left. Take a look at your calendars and if you can join us the second week of August - register and come on out to northern Utah!

Could someone provide an overview of how the soaring season waxes and wanes over the course of a typical year in Utah? Thanks.

Just look at the past few years of OLC flights for Region 9. Filter for individual Utah clubs and sites.

Utah can provide year round soaring from the five primary sites with secondary locations providing safari trips and possible future primary bases.

January and February is primarily flown from Logan and Morgan with wave and ridge. The wave and ridge season runs from September through May most years.

Thermal season starts in the south in early March from Parowon and moves north to the Wasatch front from Nephi to Logan in late March to early April. Spring flying is mostly valley thermal flying. Late May brings the big mountain flying that is best in the south and moving north with the summer. Parowon is good in June, but can be trickier in July and August as the monsoon season brings moisture up from the south. Nephi peaks in early July, but has excellent soaring through September as long as you are aware of the potential for storms from the south. Logan peaks in July and August as the monsoon usually feeds just enough moisture north to provide cloud streets starting in Nevada and running northeast across Utah through Wyoming and into Montana.

Southern Utah from Hurricane to Nephi provide great big Sky thermal soaring with cloudbase from 17k to 20k. Logan provides great mountain soaring with hundreds of miles of high ridges and great alpine thermals. Cloudbases tend to be 15k to 18k.

Fall brings the westerly winds that support the raptor migration and great ridge soaring from mid-September through October.

Nephi and Logan are visitor friendly and provide great soaring all summer. Checking for tows ahead of time is recommended.

I thought you were linking to one of Bruno's flights out of Logan. Instead, I get what seems to be the RAS version of getting Rick Rolled. Props.
