Vulcan XH558 receives no funding from Government

She is almost entirely dependent on commercial income and the generosity of
those who feel it is important to keep her flying.

If you are amongst this group, Vulcan to the Sky Trust would greatly value
your support.

Statement from the Board:

At their recent regular meeting earlier this week, the Board of Trustees of
the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) met via conference call to review the
financial status of the Trust. The Board discussed the latest funding
appeal, which is currently falling behind the level needed to sustain the
Trust's continued operations.

The VTST has no cash reserves: if the appeal fails to raise the £133,600
required by the end of March, then the additional £150,000 needed by the end
of June for XH558 to reach this summer's display season and the resulting
revenue opportunities, there are no emergency funds available to allow the
Trust to keep going.

Notwithstanding the serious shortfall in the current appeal and the absence
of any reserve, the Board have asked the Trust's executive team to re-double
their efforts over the next four weeks to generate increased funds from the
current appeal, and to explore all other avenues of funding. If that
endeavour proves unsuccessful, bearing in mind their duty to ensure the
Trust remains solvent at all times, the Board will have no option but to
place the staff on one month's notice.

The Trustees considered that XH558's stalwart community of supporters would
want to know of the critical funding issue which the Trust now faces, which
could result in the Trust ceasing operations before the planned display
season.

The Board would like to assure all of XH558's supporters that they remain as
determined as ever to ensure XH558 participates in this year's display
programme and, indeed, to carry on with the feasibility studies for the
extension of her flying life beyond 2013. However, without the requisite
financial support we cannot deliver that.

Oh dear, this is not good news. I plan to be in Blighty for a visit this
summer and have been earnestly hoping for one last look at a Vulcan in
flight.

Cheers,

This will probably sound heretical but I can't help thinking that there are
better ways of spending this sort of money than on keeping XH558 in the air
for the few hours it has left.

Like a splash of paint on XM597, for example.

XH558 is a charity trust so all the money raised can only be spent on XH558,
it receives no official funding at all, every penny has to be raised and
accounted for by the trust. Hopefully if things go well and the
modifications can be done she will be flying for some years to come. one sat
on the ground does nothing to show how amazing and graceful they are in the
air for such a big plane, its good that some try to keep one in the air and
not just a memory for those that saw them fly and a stories for the next
generation

things arn't looking too bad every day they are a few pounds closer to her
flying this year, and they may be able to do the modifications to keep her
in the air a few more years to come, fingers crossed

I understand this and wasn't suggesting that the Trust should hand over its
cash to other projects, even if it could do so legally.

Rather I was trying to point out that a high-profile, high-cost - but
ultimately very limited - endeavour like keeping a Vulcan flying will tend to
divert scarce resources from other, less ambitious projects in the field of
aviation history.

I don't mean to sound churlish. I just feel that the sums of money involved
would yield much greater value in the long run if spent in other, less
dramatic, ways.

you could be right about money going to other projects ( i would love to see
more WWII aircraft flying again).

It is an expensive plane to keep flying the total they need to raise and
keep it in the air up to end of June is £800 000, which could be spent on
getting some different planes in the air.

This could be its last year of flying its now coming to the limit of the
flying hours AVRO ever tested on the frames, even if the modifications can
be done to the wings, it might no give it much more flying time anyway if it
does work.

hopefully money will go to other projects in time and we can get to see
other great aircraft fly once again
