Default First Solo flight today!!

Hey everybody, im new to this group but I just had to tell people that
I did my first solo flight today! Bring on the congrats Without
warning, my instructor told me to pull up the the terminal, and got out
of the plane and told me to do a circuit on my own. It went great....I
didn't flare quite enough on the landing, but it was still one of my
better ones. When I got back my insturctor dumped a bucket of water on
me and I suppose it was some sort of tradition in my flight school.

P.S. Flying solo is so much more fun than with an instructor aint it?
Nobody to look over your shoulder analysing your every move :P

I did my first solo flight today!

Congratulations! Ain't life AMU!

Without warning...

Solo hadn't been discussed at all in the previous few lessons?

...and told me to do a circuit on my own.

Just one? Traditionally it had been three.

When I got back my insturctor dumped a bucket of water on
me and I suppose it was some sort of tradition in my flight school.

The one I'm familiar with is tearing your shirt. I escaped that. (I
would have been ****ed at ripping up a perfectly good shirt)

Whooo-hoo! Way to go!

Without warning, my instructor told me to pull up the the terminal, and got out
of the plane and told me to do a circuit on my own. It went great...

That's the best way to do it -- you don't have a chance to get nervous!
My CFI did the same thing to me, and it went great.

When I got back my insturctor dumped a bucket of water on
me and I suppose it was some sort of tradition in my flight school.

Whew -- I'm glad my CFI didn't do that to me, since I soloed in the
late fall, in Wisconsin!

He also didn't tear my shirt off, but did have me "bring an old
T-shirt" in from home, for the purposes of writing the date and
circumstances of my solo flight.

That shirt hung in the FBO until I got my ticket, and has since been
hanging proudly on my rec-room wall (right next to Mary's) for years
now...

P.S. Flying solo is so much more fun than with an instructor aint it?

That's a good sign that you were ready. Shoot, I was kinda missing my
CFI, at first. It took a few more solo flights for me to appreciate
his absence...

Good job -- welcome to the club!

Congratulations.

Though, I think if you have to ask for it, the gift is somewhat diminished.

You obviously pine for someone to second-guess you...after all, you've
posted your experience here.

I'm guessing, both from the one circuit and the bucket of water
(I got mine on a cold January day, thankfully it was warm water)
that the poster is from Canada. I might even guess Quebec,
from his email address...

Congrats, Jean-Marc!

Yes, I am from Canada, and luckily it was a warm day, and I find its
always too hot in the cabin even with the vents open (not to mention I
was sweating form being nervous :P), so it was a nice refresher to get
the water. Im not from Quebec though, im in Ontario and im bilingual.
The guys at my school told me that at the Toronto Island airport, the
school used to dump you in the lake after your first solo....I would
hope to have a warm day there :O

P.S. Cut my shirt tail off?....i dont think so... and yes I suppose the
rate of climb was a bit higher without the added weight of the
instructor. Although my instructor is pretty thin, and I fly a Cessna
172 so its quite heavy anyways so I didn't notice much of a difference.

Congratulations. I soloed in a Cessna 150. My 230 lbs instructor told me
that I would get to find out how much better the plane flies without
230lbs of lard in it. He then signed my student pilot certificate for
solo and off I went. The cessna 150 definitely climed better, I kept
finding myself turing downwind, 100 feet above pattern altitude. On a
hot day with him and myself in it you would battle to reach pattern
altitude by the time you turned downwind.
