Default Skai: 5-Place Hydrogen-powered Electric, four hours or 400 miles - Saki 5-place.jpg (0/1)

https://venturebeat.com/2019/05/29/a...ered-air-taxi/
Hopkinton, Massachusetts-based Alaka’i Technologies, which was founded
in 2006, might not have high-profile backers or a coffer full of
capital, but that’s not to imply the air mobility startup hasn’t been
architecting something potentially game-changing. At an event in Los
Angeles this week it unveiled Skai, an electric vertical takeoff and
landing vehicle it claims is the world’s first to be powered by
hydrogen fuel cells.

Skai, which was codesigned by BMW-owned global creative consultancy
Designworks, eschews jet fuel for the aforementioned hydrogen. Its
fuel cells are 95% reusable (the remaining 5% are 99% recyclable), and
Alaka’i claims they enable the Skai to travel longer distances — over
three hours per tank, or around 300 miles — and carry a heavier
overall payload than the competition. Alaka’i says this makes it
ideally suited for emergency response, freight distribution, and
related sectors.

It’s worth noting that Metro Skyway, a subsidiary of Tel Aviv-based
Urban Aeronautics, announced in 2017 that it would build a
hydrogen-powered air taxi it hopes to get off the ground by 2022, but
that vehicle will initially run on jet fuel. Skai is using hydrogen
from day one.

Skai’s fuel cells power six electric motors with built-in redundancy
and lift a cabin with an airframe parachute that can fit four to five
passengers. Skai hasn’t yet been certified by the Federal Aviation
Administration, but Alaka’i cofounder and CEO Brian Morrison expressed
confidence that the company’s executive and engineering team — which
hails from NASA, Raytheon, Beech Aircraft, McDonnell Douglas, Hughes,
DayJet, SATSAir, Cirrus, Metro Aviation, and Delta Airlines — will
clear that hurdle in the near future.

“This remarkably impressive team have come together to build on our
collective experience to finally realize our singular, critical vision
to launch Skai and transform transportation,” said cofounder and CEO
Brian Morrison. “Skai offers practical, real-life solutions to
everything from relieving traffic congestion to delivering supplies
during natural disasters. Skai is set to offer affordable, realistic
applications in the commercial, private, freight, and personal air
mobility markets.”

Experts predict that air taxis will begin ferrying customers in
earnest within three years and that these taxis could start flying
autonomously or semi-autonomously as early as 2025. Analysts at Roland
Berger forecast 3,000 flying taxis will be in operation globally in
five years, a number they say will increase to 12,000 by 2030 and to
nearly 100,000 by 2050.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley projects the market for flying taxis will
reach $1.5 trillion by 2040, which is likely why there’s sustained
interest from the private sector.

Just last week, German startup Lilium Jet completed the first test of
its five-seater aircraft. Chinese electronics conglomerate Ehang
intends to build a fleet of passenger-carrying quadcopters in the next
few years. Google cofounder Larry Page’s Kittyhawk received backing
from the New Zealand government for its self-piloting, vertical
takeoff and landing (VTOL) air taxi. And Volocopter’s 18-propeller
passenger drone recently completed test flights over Dubai as it races
to beat ride-hailing giant Uber to the punch with the world’s first
drone taxi system.

And air taxis from AeroMobil, Vertical Aeorospace, Joby Aviation,
Airbus, Boeing, and Bell are in various stages of development, in
addition to over 100 such electric aircraft worldwide. Bosch expects
drone test flights to ramp up in cities like Los Angeles, Dallas, and
Singapore next year.

Fueled by Hydrogen.
Powered by Simplicity.

Skai is a radically simple air mobility system designed to go from A
to Anywhere. It eliminates complexity for an unparalleled level of
reliability and safety. It uses hydrogen fuel cells, to provide an
energy solution that’s truly clean from end to end.

Only simplicity can solve today’s most complex challenges, to create
practical transportation for all. A powerful solution that is SIMPLE,
SAFE and CLEAN.

Simplicity is the Solution.
We believe that simplicity is smart engineering. It's a deeply
rational process that leads to the best solutions. A good example is
Skai's advanced, simple design. It can be produced efficiently and in
large numbers, making Skai more affordable for everyone. Which makes
the benefits increase as well, reducing traffic and pollution, ...

---
Simply. Better.
Simplicity is better transportation. It reduces gridlock and enhances
personal mobility. At its core, simplicity is safe, reliable,
efficient, and clean, based on rock-solid fault-tolerant design.

It's ease of use and comfort for everyday travel. Simplicity is a
flexible platform that supports multiple uses and needs minimal
infrastructure. And it's what makes Skai available to everyone.
Simplicity even makes it look cool.

Air Mobility for All.
Skai democratizes air transportation. It gives everyone the freedom to
go from A to Anywhere – anytime, safely and comfortably. Its simple
design not only makes it efficient to produce, it makes it easier to
use for passengers and pilots alike.

Minimizing the complexity of operation, and reducing the need for
costly regular maintenance. But just as importantly, it reduces the
stress of flying for all of us. A lot of effort went into making it
effortless.

Ready When You Are.
Skai is low impact. It requires minimal infrastructure. There’s no
need to build a runway or helipad. You don't need airport-style hubs.
Skai can operate from existing locations, such as rooftops, driveways
and parking lots. A step forward for transportation is more than just
viable. It’s ready for takeoff, from just about anywhere.

Pure Wonder.
Skai is the purest experience of flight. Its design eliminates
anything that might get in the way of enjoying the true wonder of
flying. The V-formation seating gives 180º views to every passenger.

The rotor booms are swept back to prevent sightline obstructions and
to eliminate vibration and noise. All to make the most of the
floor-to-moonroof windows that offer sweeping views of the world
below. And 5G Wi-Fi for those too busy to look.

http://skai.co/safe
Elevated Safety.
Skai’s safety is unparalleled. It's the result of simple,
fault-tolerant engineering. Meaning that in the event of a failure,
the vehicle can continue to operate safely. Weak points have been
removed.

Every key component has backup. For example, there are 6 rotors, any
one can fail and the vehicle can still land safely. All so that Skai
can handle the most improbable failures without creating a hazardous
situation. That's why peace of mind is a standard feature.

Proven, Advanced Technology.
Skai’s advanced technology delivers a higher level of safety. In
addition to fault- tolerant systems like the rotors and fuel cells,
Skai is equipped with next-generation Fly-By-Light controls and FAA
certified avionics. All of these components are certified and proven.
In fact, some of these trusted technologies were originally developed
by Skai team members for prominent aerospace and defense clients.

Safety You Can Feel.
Skai does more than keep people safe, it makes them feel safe. That's
why Skai was designed for quiet, stable, vibration-free performance.
That's why we try to educate everyone about our multiple layers of
redundancy. And despite the highest levels of reliability, our
airframe parachute often gets the most attention. And that’s just
human nature.

Safe from the Ground Up.
Our goal isn’t just the safest air mobility vehicle, but the safest
air mobility system. We believe that a safe solution is a
comprehensive one. For example, we use data links with military-grade
encryption. And flight data monitoring that lets us analyze every Skai
vehicle in real-time. Why such an abundance of caution? Because safety
is always the sum of its parts. As few parts as possible of course.

Responsible Energy.
Hydrogen is a safe, powerful fuel. But every energy source – from
batteries, to gasoline, to hydrogen – comes with a degree of risk. The
key is reducing risk to the point that failure is exceptionally
unlikely. To do that we've leveraged decades of expertise and 80 years
of established hydrogen safety. To create a fault-tolerant fuel system
that is as clean as it is safe.

Essential Energy.
Simplicity is about finding the best tool for the job. Skai is
hydrogen-powered. It's the ideal energy solution for air mobility.
Even if everyone is doing something else.

Hydrogen fuel cells are better for flight, with more energy per pound.
And with the cleanest environmental footprint, they're better for the
planet. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

http://skai.co/system
Wide-Ranging Benefits
The Skai system was designed to benefit everyone, everywhere.
For individuals, Skai will mean a new level of freedom, and
transportation with fewer pain points – no more long commutes on
stressful, traffic-filled roads. It means additional quality time and
higher productivity, not to mention an easy, delightful travel
experience.

On a larger scale, Skai will help protect the environment and reduce
pollution, decrease traffic congestion, offer additional EMS and
disaster relief services, help increase energy independence, and
unlock new opportunities in the evolving air mobility economy.

Multiple Applications
Skai delivers a flexible platform with multiple uses.
SkaiCab will offer seating for up to 5 passengers with a separate,
spacious cargo hold. Air-taxi lifts will be scheduled via an intuitive
app.

SkaiMed will offer EMS and medivac services, with the ability to land
closer to patients in areas ambulances and helicopters can’t access,
as well as operating in densely populated areas.

SkaiCargo will operate feeder routes for package and other deliveries,
with a payload of up to 1000 lbs.

Point-to-any-Point Travel
At scale, the affordability of air-taxi and air-pooling services will
give everyone the freedom to go just about anywhere, whenever they
want. It might be a better way to work, reducing a 2-hour commute to
less than 30 minutes.

A quick, effortless airport drop-off, instead of the usual headache.
Or maybe a last-minute beach trip – Skai can drop passengers off right
at the hotel, luggage and all. Or, it might be inter-city business
travel, e.g. from NYC to Washington, DC, with the on-demand ability to
take that important meeting in person.

Easy, Intuitive Experience
The Skai passenger experience is easy and user-friendly. A simple app,
familiar to any ride-share user, will allow users to hail a Skai
vehicle in their area, input their destination and style of travel.

They can choose the air-pooling feature, to ride with others at a
reduced cost, or they can reserve the entire vehicle. The app will
indicate a nearby location where the vehicle will meet them, before
taking them to their destination smoothly and quietly.

Minimal Infrastructure
Skai’s light footprint and quiet, low-impact operation allows it to
take off and land from virtually anywhere, like a parking lot, field,
driveway or rooftop.
There is no need to build a dedicated hub for Skai. A mobile refueling
system will be in place to service vehicles wherever needed. Ground
support and maintenance will use existing locations. That means the
Skai system can be rapidly implemented anywhere, saving years of
infrastructure development.

Moving forward, as the number of vehicles in operation increases,
permanent infrastructure facilities, like fueling stations, will be
added.

Vehicles can be refueled in less than 10 minutes, using smart pumps.
With the nozzle locked in position, the fuel station communicates with
the Skai vehicle and ensures a safe, efficient hydrogen transfer. Only
when the system checks out will fueling begin.

Additional safety measures include leak sensors, venting components
and full compliance with all local and national safety regulations.

Affordability & Scalability
Today, aircraft manufacturing is a slow, methodical and expensive
process, necessitated by the complexity of traditional aircraft
design. In fact, fewer aircraft are made today than 25 years ago.

Skai’s safe, simple, reliable design means that we can apply
automotive-scale production techniques to make air mobility accessible
to everyone. In volume production, Skai might cost as much as a luxury
car, and air-pooling prices would be competitive with (or cheaper
than) road-based ride-sharing options.

System Details
Expertise: Co-Founder, President and CTO Brian Morrison
At Skai, we’re passionate about safety and aviation. In fact, key team
members have been instrumental in developing key safety technologies
and developments in aviation.

Co-Founder, President and CTO Brian Morrison developed Fly-By-Light
(FBL) controls, which improve on the previous generation by making the
system immune to electromagnetic interference, among other benefits.

Morrison also helped to develop the IRIS Flight Data Monitoring
system. IRIS is a comprehensive system with flight data recorder,
communications and data link capability. IRIS records flight data and
provides an always-on, always-connected signal that allows
communication specialists to monitor a vehicle’s activities in real
time, communicate with pilots through a Global Push-To-Talk Radio and
receive immediate alerts and warnings from the cockpit.

In addition, Morrison developed fault-tolerant systems for spaceborne
platforms. He’s worked on ethernet networking and other fiber-optics
systems for aviation applications. And developed distributed control
systems for the Boeing KC767 tanker and video security systems for
Airbus. He obtained a patent for his work in Engine Trend Monitoring
systems that were FAA approved. Overall, Brian has been granted 14 US
and foreign-based patents.

His innate desire to innovate has been recognized by the media and
industry peers as an Aviation Week Laureate, recipient of Raytheon's

Industry. Holmes developed a chapter on public-private partnerships in
the OSTP report on strategies for the US. commercial space flight
industry.

In addition to serving as a senior aviation executive and board member
with private and public concerns, Holmes continues to consult for
NASA, the FAA, and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and
Medicine to this day.

System Benefits: Environment
We believe that new transportation solutions must address
environmental issues head-on. That’s why Skai uses hydrogen fuel cells
– the cleanest practical end-to-end fuel system on the planet.

Transportation is a significant producer of pollution and contributes
to climate change – in the US, it accounts for the largest portion of
total emissions (28%). And while most vehicles run cleaner today than
in the past, there are more vehicles than ever that are being used
more often, offsetting the benefits of increased efficiency and
regulations. Aviation and automobiles are responsible for a
significant share of the world’s harmful emissions. In the US, road
vehicles account for 83% of total greenhouse gas emissions, with
aircraft accounting for 9%.

One of Skai’s primary goals is to ultimately reduce greenhouse
emissions and other pollutants by replacing a large number of road
vehicles and short-haul aircraft with quiet, pollution-free,
minimal-impact air mobility.

EPA: Transportation Greenhouse Gas Emissions

EPA: US Greenhouse Gas Emissions Fast Facts
https://nepis.epa.gov/Exe/ZyPDF.cgi?Dockey=P100USI5.pdf

System Benefits: Commuting
Skai has the power to improve life for everyone, every day. Perhaps
the clearest and most relatable benefit is a dramatic improvement to
commuting. Americans, on average, spend 42 minutes a day commuting –
in cities like Los Angeles or Dallas, that number is nearly double.

According to recent studies, the combined cost of traffic congestion
in terms of lost productivity and wasted fuel is more than $100
billion annually. In addition, millions of vehicles sitting in traffic
every day emit pollution, affecting the environment and human health.
There is also a psychological cost associated with commuting, from the
obvious increase in stress, to road rage, to a feeling of
helplessness.

Skai offers an alternative. Multi-hour commutes down to just minutes.
Pollution-free operation. A pleasant, comfortable experience. And once
the system is up to scale, services that are affordable for everyone.

Production Efficiency
The history of General Aviation over the past 25 years has seen a
steady decline in the number of aircraft produced each year, which
leads to lower volumes for critical components such as engines and
avionics, and corresponding higher prices.

Skai takes a different approach. By focusing on a safe, simple,
reliable vehicle, we apply automotive manufacturing techniques and
scale, to produce tens of thousands of vehicles each year. Our
manufacturing partner is working closely with us to lower costs and
increase production rates. All key factors that help to increase
end-user affordability and utilization in markets never before served
by air vehicles – to deliver on the promise of reduced pollution and
improved quality of life.

Application: SkaiCab
A key application for Skai will be providing point-to-any-point travel
for the general public. This can include everything from affordable,
everyday air-pooling to work, a weekend trip to the beach, or
inter-city business travel.

The SkaiCab configuration features seating for up to 5 and an easy and
user-friendly passenger experience. A intuitive app, familiar to any
ride-share user, will allow users to hail a Skai vehicle in their
area, input their destination and style of travel (sharing the ride
via air-pooling or reserving the entire vehicle).

Once Skai production is at scale, the cost for air-pooling should be
competitive with or cheaper than current road-based ride-share
services. Reserving an entire vehicle will be more expensive than
air-pooling, but significantly less costly than current helicopter and
fixed-wing air-taxi prices.

Application: SkaiMed
The SkaiMed configuration is designed for first responder, EMS and
medivac services. Its advantages are clear – it’s an ambulance that
can go anywhere, from anywhere. SkaiMed has the ability to land closer
to patients and access areas road-based ambulances and helicopters
can’t get to. In addition, Skai’s quiet, low RPM rotors and minimal
rotor wash (air turbulence) allow it to operate in densely populated
areas.

In a medical emergency, every moment counts, and Skai’s high
availability and efficient performance means that patients will get
the care they need more quickly. When the vehicle is en route to the
hospital, Skai’s IRIS avionics can transmit real-time patient data to
both the emergency room and to the doctor’s smartphone via telemetry.

Application: SkaiCargo
SkaiCargo is a freight service application, offering a payload
capability of up to 1000 lbs. It will typically operate on feeder
routes – routes off of the main cargo hubs that require smaller
vehicles. In the SkaiCargo configuration, interior tie-downs or floor
tracks are used to secure payload. There is a single seat for the
pilot, or no seat at all, in the case of a ground-control pilot or
fully autonomous operation.

With the increasing popularity of online shopping, there are more
feeder route trucks on the roads. They not only add to traffic
congestion, but also emit harmful emissions. SkaiCargo can help
relieve this additional stress on busy roadways with its clean, quiet,
low-impact performance.

Infrastructure
Skai’s infrastructure is safe and simple, in part because there’s not
much to it – no airport, landing pads or other facilities to build.
Skai can take off and land from existing locations, like parking lots,
rooftops – really anywhere with about 500 square feet of space.

Fueling stations are outdoors as a safety precaution. In case of a
leak, extremely light, non-toxic hydrogen gas will quickly and safely
dissipate into the air. (In fact, hydrogen’s buoyancy means that it
will ultimately escape the earth’s atmosphere into space). Smart fuel
pumps “talk” to the vehicle to ensure the system checks out before
pumping. Refueling takes less than 10 minutes, allowing up to 4 hours
of continuous flight.

Ground control systems monitor every Skai vehicle in the area, with
the ability to assist or intervene if there’s a problem. For example,
in the event that a pilot loses consciousness, the vehicle can be
safely flown by a ground-based pilot. In the event that the encrypted
tactical data link to the ground pilot fails, the vehicle can safely
RTB (return to base) or land nearby, fully autonomously. Note that
Skai is autonomous-ready today, but FAA regulations do not currently
allow its use.

This Mass. Startup Exits Stealth With its Electric Flying Taxi
Alakai Technologies Debuted Skai, World's First Hydrogen Fuel Air Taxi

By Srividya Kalyanaraman - May 30, 2019

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a …locally-made electric flying
shuttle.

Wednesday, Hopkinton, Mass.-based startup Alaka’i Technologies exited
stealth mode with the launch of Skai, the world’s first
hydrogen-powered electric vehicle designed for air mobility. Powered
by hydrogen fuel that’s stored on board, Skai works on six electric
motors and can fly up to four hours or 400 miles without refueling,
ferrying five passengers including the pilot.

“We wanted to solve an age-old problem of traffic congestion and
pollution,” said Brian Morrison, co-founder and CTO of Alakai
Technologies.

Morrison and Alaka’i’s CEO Steve Hanvey were both a part of the
Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments or (AGATE
https://www.nasa.gov/centers/langley...ts/AGATE.html), a
public-private partnership launched in 1994 as a collaboration between
NASA, FAA and the aviation industry to devise an aviation system that
would replace short distance transportation.

“[AGATE] sowed the seeds for personal air transportation 25 years
ago,” said Morrison. “And here we are today building this vehicle
fueled by hydrogen.”

Morrison founded Alaka’i Technologies in 2007 and, in that same year,
the company won FAA approvals
https://www.prweb.com/releases/2007/03/prweb513660.htm for its engine
trend monitoring system and digital flight data recording system. The
idea for Skai was developed in 2012 and Morrison worked on patenting
the vehicle from 2012 to 2018. He noted that the company didn’t start
building the prototype until May 2018.

“We went from concept to prototype in less than 12 months, and now
we’re exiting stealth mode,” Morrison said.

Skai, which boasts of being environmentally friendly with clean zero
emissions and carbon free travel, was developed in collaboration with
Designworks, a BMW Group Company that served as the industrial design
partner.

Morrison noted that Skai’s ability to fly for four hours without
refueling is more efficient than comparable electric vehicles today.
And he credits that to the energy density.

“The unit of energy that Skai’s six motors can store is about 226
times higher than lithium-ion batteries,” Morrison said.

While the company still awaits FAA approval, those in Stowe,
Massachusetts, might just be lucky enough to spot one of these
vehicles flying over the Minuteman Field. Morrison envisions Alakai
running its own commercial operations, similar to ridesharing apps
like Lyft and Uber once the company starts producing the vehicles.

But until then, Skai will be adapted to multiple non-commute purposes
like SkaiMed, which is a First Responder, EMS and Medivac service,
SkaiCargo, a feeder route and last mile freight services and
SkaiCraft, a personal and commuter air mobility system.

One of the key features of Skai is that it can take off and land at a
large enough open area like parking lots or football fields, making
the mobility systems a viable option for commuters.

Data from the United Nations shows that 60 percent of the world’s
population will move to cities by 2030—up from 50 percent
today—naturally overwhelming public transportation systems that are
already operating beyond full capacity. Hence, commuting will get more
challenging before it gets easy. Already Boston has one of the longest
commute times — an average of 40 minutes each way.

To that end, Skai’s goal of transforming mobility seems imperative.
“Our goal is to change mass transportation,” said Morrison. “We want
to be able to allow anyone to fly in our aircraft.”

FAA Certifies Alakai Technologies’ Engine Trend Monitoring System for
Cirrus Aircraft
The certification also applies to Alakai's Digital Flight Data
Recording System (DFDS) software which, when combined with the ETMS,
effectively provides the popular Cirrus piston-engine aircraft with a
"black box" recorder, currently not required on aircraft with fewer
than 10 seats.

MARCH 23, 2007
HOPKINTON, Mass., March 22, 2007 – Alakai Technologies Corporation
(www.alakai1.com/index.htm) announced today that the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) has issued a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC)
for installation of the company's Engine Trend Monitoring System
(ETMS) on Cirrus SR20 and SR22 aircraft. The certification also
applies to Alakai's Digital Flight Data Recording System (DFDS)
software which, when combined with the ETMS, effectively provides the
popular Cirrus piston-engine aircraft with a "black box" recorder,
currently not required on aircraft with fewer than 10 seats.

"We are pleased with the efficiency of the FAA certification process
and look forward to the additional safety and security measures that
the highly affordable Engine Trend Monitoring System technology will
now provide to Cirrus owners and operators," said Brian Morrison,
president of Alakai Technologies.

The automated, predictive system monitors piston engine performance in
real time, significantly improving safety and reliability while
reducing engine maintenance costs. For Cirrus operators, this improves
the efficiency of engine operation and maintenance, transitioning
required recordkeeping from a time-consuming, manual procedure to a
real-time, in-flight automated, electronic record. The system enhances
accuracy and consistency from flight to flight, and from pilot to
pilot.

"Cirrus is committed to the safety of pilots and passengers in our
aircraft. This new system will allow Cirrus owners and operators,
especially Part 135 operators, to focus on flying rather than manually
documenting engine performance while in the air," said Cirrus
Co-founder and Vice Chairman, Dale Klapmeier. "We look forward to the
hassle-free advantages this system brings to Cirrus owners and
operators, as well as to the safety benefits of having an on-board
flight data recorder."

Alakai Technologies developed the Engine Trend Monitoring System in
response to SATSair's need to automate its FAA-approved manual engine
trend monitoring system. SATSair, based in Greenville, SC, currently
flies 26 Cirrus SR22 airplanes and over 1500 passengers per month in
point-to-point, air cab operations under Federal Aviation Part 135 air
taxi regulations in the SE USA, and was the first fleet air cab
operation to embrace the SR22. SATSair has placed orders for 26 Alakai
systems, with an option for an additional 100 systems.

"SATSair is proud to have worked closely with Alakai in bringing this
important safety innovation to General Aviation," said Steve Hanvey,
President and CEO of SATSair. "This new system enhances the safety and
performance of all our aircraft by automating the trend monitoring
process, as well as providing us with a flight data recorder. Trend
monitoring is fundamental to the successful operation of our air cab
fleet."

Additional benefits of the Engine Trend Monitoring System include:

• Real-time trend and exceedance analysis with trend forecasting
graphs (web-accessible) to identify engine and performance problems
before they occur

• Improves long-term engine performance, fuel economy, and safety

• Reduces operating costs, warranty costs and potentially reduces
insurance premiums

• Provides a simultaneous “always-on” flight data recording capability
(DFDS) to assist with flight records and accident investigations

• Provides automated flight visualization or ‘track’ files for
training and playback purposes

The DFDS software performs the same function as flight data recorders
that are mandatory on larger transport aircraft and have proven to be
a great help to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) in
determining the cause of aircraft incidents. Alakai’s ETMS/DFDS
installations are expected to provide enhanced safety and potentially
lower insurance rates for Cirrus owners who equip their aircraft with
this latest technology.
