Default Happening at Minden, NV

Minden, NV is arguably one of the world’s premier soaring sites,
offering superb soaring conditions, spectacular scenery, and
attractions to keep the family happy. Yet with all this, Minden is
perceived by some as being “glider unfriendly”. Since past airport
management did their best to discourage soaring, it’s understandable
glider pilots responded by assembling their gliders elsewhere.

The soaring and power aircraft community came together to help bring
about change. It took several years and hard work, but the
transformation is remarkable! We now have airport management that is
not just tolerant of soaring; they are proactive participants in
promoting soaring and small GA at Minden.

Our soaring FBO is “SoaringNV”, 775 782-9595 or www.soaringnv.com.
with four tow planes and a fleet of gliders, including some newer
glass. They are clean, well maintained, and equipped with transponders
and PowerFlarm (when available). As soon as you open SoaringNV’s door,
you’ll know your welcome.

There’s a lot happening, with the upcoming 2012 SSA convention in Reno
– Feb. 2-4; wave camp at SoaringNV – Mar. 25 – 31; the open class
nationals - June 12 – 21; work on soaring related improvements on the
airport east side, and more. Even the governor is on board, declaring
June 2012 as Aviation Appreciation Month in Nevada.

If you haven’t visited Minden for some time, come on back. Those of us
who’ve worked to help bring this about know you’ll be pleased with our
“glider friendly” atmosphere.

Having visited Minden a couple of times in the last two years, I can
vouch for the fact that SoaringNV has really made this a welcoming
place to come fly. It helps to have good tow-out gear, but the line
crew will walk a wing all the way to the ramp if need be. Or all the
way back from the runway in the worst downpour you can imagine, as I
tested out this summer.

Daily weather briefings and guest instructors/coaches in the summer
are another good offering.

The Reno Tahoe area is blessed with great soaring and 2 great
commercial operations and Air Sailing for the club operations. For
someone looking for year-round soaring and access to thermals, wave
and spectacular scenery, Minden is pretty hard to beat.

I spent 2 full weeks at minden this summer trailering my ship from
ohio.

I had the time of my life and could not have been treated any better.

My only regret is leaving to come home to ohio.

2 weeks = 60 plus hours airtime and over 6000k for the olc.

Hope to go again next year!

Thanks soaring NV!

There is no better cure for the winter blues than a wave flight at
Minden. The view from 25,000 feet looking west is the best I have
seen in 70 years of life.

So how is the soaring in February in Minden? I've always wanted to do some
wave flying out west, and with the convention coming up I was wondering what
the winter conditions are like.
