It's actually a frame from a low-budget war movie in the early '50s.
Can't remember which one now, I saw it (probably) 40 years ago.

Bail out would mean a crash, doubt the plane would be flyable. My
guess is that the planes crash landed with shot up canopies, or maybe
they flipped over on crash landing.

You could very well be correct. However, so far, in five minutes I
have found at least three web sites which have published this same

Also, the movie clip answer doesn't explain the difference in the
canopies.

Yes, it is all speculation. It would be interesting to read a

showing B-29/F-13 at Morotai from the AU war memorial files.
was able to obtain some data from NARA's records on the 3rd PRS
concering those photos and why those planes were there...
