Default missing serial port

My new laptop does not have a serial port for connecting to my Cambridge
GPS.

What are the best options?

USB to Serial - I hear of those not working.

PCMCIA to Serial - Is this an option.

Any advice appreciated.

I've got a Belkin USB to serial converter, it works OK with my Garmin 12XL
with things like Waypoint+, Auotroute, Lxe and Seeyou but I can't get EWview
to work at all with my logger.

USB to serial is pretty much sorted.

In a little while a few people will be along to tell you that their
particular combnation works. Best bet is to try your laptop with someone
elses USB/Serial pod, verify its working and then buy one of those.

Yes, and I'm guessing a more reliable one, but more expensive. Here is
one example:

Hi,

I've heard mixed results with USB converters but I've never used one. A
friend at the gliderport was unable to get his USB converter to work when
trying to connect to his SN-10. I plugged my Socket (brand name) PCMCIA
card into his laptop and we installed the drivers and it then worked great.
The same card has always worked great for me when connecting to products
from Cambridge, ILEC, LX Navigation, Filser, etc. I have communicated with
all those brands with my Socket card.

I'm sold on PCMCIA cards for now. But I've heard of some successes with USB
converters as well.

Try the free EW Windows uploader available from:

http://www.edavies.nildram.co.uk/ew/...der/index.html

Although I have not tried it using a USB Serial Converter, when used
with serial ports it overcomes the shortcomings of EWVIEW (DOS &
Windows). I would be interested to hear how it works with a USB
converter.

Best regards,

Downlod is also possible from PDA if you use that. Cambridge software
does not support XP very well so in my case it took many reboots to
get upload to work from new laptop. I was eventually successful using
a port replicator (I had that from work) that has a serial port on the
back.

Best solution is keep old laptop!

Hi

I have some experience with usb2serial but with MAC and GPS over a
PC-Emulator.
One of the big problem in the Window world seems to be XP home. I heared
that all should work OK with XP professional but not with the home version.
Or you use Win98se it is old but works good with USB stuff..
I use an USB2serial from Aten www.aten.com.tw UC232
(http://www.aten-usa.com/main.php?loc...ct&Item_ID=220 for english
reading). It works perfect for me. There is also a very cheap on from
www.lindy.com but I didn't try it. They say that it works with XP el.al. I
think it is worth to try.
http://www.lindy.com/us/productfolde...2857/index.php

It is a big difference when your GPS needs all signals from the rs232 or
only GND/TX/RX. In the second case it should be no problem to get it working
with hardly any adapter. In the other case - pray.

Hope this helps.

Have you considered IR (InfraRed) most laptops on PDAs have IR and it
sometimes shows up as a serial port or could probably be mapped to a
"logical" serial port.

I found my new StinkPad T42 no longer has serial and have been using
IR to my Palm.. until I get my port replicator.
