Default ADF antenna

What is the proper length?
Since my old one departed in flight, I have nothing to measure the new one
against.

Depends on the ADF. I have an installation manual for the Cessna ARC
R546? which shows the correct length of the sense antenna from top of
wing to the insulator. You can by a new stainless steel sense wire kit
from Chief and others.

It is pretty loose. The AGC makes up for a multitude of length errors. I
generally start out at 72" and go from there. Always worked for me.

Why does it depend on the ADF? Wouldn't it be some fraction of an
average wavelength for NDB frequencies?

It's a very tiny fraction of teh NDB frequency wavelength, which is over
200 meters. The radio has to have some internal matching for the
much shortened length.
