Could someone(s) please elaborate on international travel restrictions on
homebuilt aircraft? I'm in the US and would like to know what problems
one might encounter traveling throughout the Americas.

Some countries are suspicious of homebuilts for differing reasons and
therefore require additional paperwork for legal transit through their
airspace. In realty, it isn't a big problem.

It is quite simple for US homebuilts to get authorization to travel to
Canada. You just need to carry a "Standardised Validation Of A Special
Airworthiness Certificate - Experimental, For The Purpose Of Operating
A United States - Registered Amateur-Built Aircraft In Canadian
Airspace". You download it, print it out, and carry it with you.

The above link might get cut into two pieces - just paste it back into
one piece to get it to work.
