jeppesen updates for the Garmin waas units
Did anyone come to a conclusion yet on the question of whether or not the
PCI adapter will still work to update the cards for the 430/530 waas units ? Is it also confirmed that it uses a new card ? Jeppesens web site is terrible ! try a search on the key word waas and it comes up with zero hits. Also there navdata pages do not mention anything about waas. Thanks in advance... |

jeppesen updates for the Garmin waas units
I will be picking up my new 430W/530W installation next week. The cards are
physically the same, but have more RAM. Jepp told me the new cards are not supported by the PCM/CIA adapter, and need the USB writer. I have yet to test this, or upgrade my subscription. |

The new cards have 16meg, the old ones 4 I think. You can roll your old subscription into the new WAAS subscription, which is slightly more expensive. |

jeppesen updates for the Garmin waas units
I swapped my 430 for the 430W unit a few weeks back and indeed the
WAAS unit uses a 16 BM data card (I don't know the size of the terrain card yet). The card requires the USB adapter for programming and it takes about 30-40 minutes to burn a new one. The terrain cards are only available from Garmin, and they have a different hardware device for programming them. Garmin wants about $99 for that unit. The terrain updates are $35 for a single update and I believe it's $410 for the annual subscription. As for the Jeppesen update, the can cancel your non-waas remaining time and credit it to the new WAAS subscription. Very helpful folks there. jeppesen updates for the Garmin waas units
I'm brand new to this Garmin 430 updating process. Just got a 430WAAS
in my 201 and paid $149 for the data writer. They wanted another $150 or so for a second data card -- OUCH!! Haven't downloaded update yet but will soon. Did you say I need a different writer for the terrain card!?? And it is a different card type so if I need a backup for that I will need to pay an extra $150 or so? And it costs $410/year for terrain updates!?? I think I'll take up bowling! Heck, terrain doesn't change much ... Ok towers and such but still, this is silly. What is the FAA requirement for updating terrain data cards?? Chuck |

Yes, you need a different writer for the terrain card - and it's not
from Jeppesen - you get that from Garmin. I believe they said it was $99, and then you download terrain updates from Garmin - one-time updates for $35 or a subscription for $210 (i think). As for a spare terrain data card, you also get that from Garmin. The terrain card contains both the terrain and the obstacles. The terrain is not available on a subscription basis, since it is rarely updated, but the subscription updates your obstacle database every 56 days. jeppesen updates for the Garmin waas units
Thanks to everyone for the info..
Should have my 530w very soon and then I can spend the extra bucks with jeppesen. "me" wrote in message ... jeppesen updates for the Garmin waas units
The 530W is apparently missing some previous nice features of the legacy
units- namely, on the main nav page you can display lightning, but not nexrad. Also, on the older units you could show nexrad and lightning on the same page, but on the 530W you can only look at lightning. On the map page, but not the main nav page you can display both, as before. What gives with this? Why are we losing functionality with the supposed upgrade? My avionics guy called Garmin on this, and got some weak answer about range, or some such, which if true, should have also been the case in the legacy units. I'm picking up my 530W/430W installation this Wednesday, so should have more info at that time. |
