Thanks, Steve!

I have wondered if anyone here knows what model Sabres were
flown by the Aussie squadron at Ubon Airfield, Thailand in early '60's.
And if they ever left skid marks on the roof of the guard shack at
the main gate.

They were Australian-built 'Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation CA-27' Mk
32

This site will give you the actual dates of the deployment and the
individual aircraft histories involved. Nothing about skid marks
though....

Wow, thanks, Dave. Those pointers were most interesting.
I guess the official histories neglect the antics of those
Aussies at Ubon Airfield. The sites failed to mention
Christmas 1969 when the Aussies wanted the Yanks
to feel more at home, so covered the Wing HQ building
with a blanket of snow. Or their imprompto radio
broadcast station.

Old Chief Lynn (No witnesses = No paperwork......right on!)

Now, there's a bunch of stories just waiting to be heard....

I hear the occasional snippet of those days.

79 Sqn was tasked to protect the airfield, thus freeing up resources to go
further north.

I heard that one of their other duties, official or otherwise, was to
simulate MiG 17 activity in a local training environment. Sometimes
bouncing returning strike packages, with tired and jittery crews - who still
carried live ammo.....

Braver men than me, fer shure.
