Default Glideport problem

Unfortunately there is no new administrator. I talked to the new administrator and he is too busy.
No one currently administer or maintain glideport (aka SSA tracker) which is very unfortunate since it is a great tool but whenever inreach server don’t respond from whatever reason it marks that particular inreach as inactive so over time I think maybe half of the inreaches are no longer showing on the tracker, including mine. Not sure if this is only inreach or also spot. So we can no longer rely on it and either find someone who has the time and skills to take it over or switch to alternative such as glidertracker.org.

Default Glideport problem

When I originally posted my concern about Glideport, I was unable to get it to accept my new Garmin/Inreach mapshare link. I tried again a few days ago and Glideport accepted my link, and my wife subsequently saw my tracking.. I have since then gone back to check and my new link is still there, so I think someone has fixed the code issue which was causing a problem with the changed mapshare format introduced by Garmin sometime in the last few months.

Monday morning, none of the contests were loading, only normal tracking was working. However, contests loaded fine a bit later. Perhaps a server restart was in progress earlier, or a process had to be restarted. Never heard back if there was intervention.

There are multiple unrelated issues reported in this thread.
First the format is still https://share.garmin.com/xxxxxxx the new format someone suggested is incorrect so dont try this new format.
The issue I am having has nothing to do with anything discussed here. According to Pedja “GP has logic that when there are many unsuccessful consecutive attempts to retrieve data for a device, it gives up and marks the device as invalid. Apparently inReach servers were down for long enough for that to happen…”

This issue repeated itself for me twice a year and for those who fly less frequently maybe not as often. But the end result is that once your InReach is marked as invalid you will never show up again without admin intervention. Creating a new account does not fix the issue. I know of few other inreaches which were dropped permanently and I bet there are many more. I suggested to Pedja at the rime to remove this logic of marking devices as invalid when servers are down, but I guess this logic still exists and now there is no one to fix this. I would be happy to click a donate button if this will help sustaining and improving this valuable service.

Bottom line, glideport is unreliable now.

Sigh!

Ramy,

Appreciate your comments. SSA has been discussing the issue and we'll consider suggestions.

The new format is provided by Garmin on new inReach devices and they have been unwilling to assign the original format. Glideport would need to be modified to accept the new format to work for new purchasers of inReach devices.

After speaking with the designer/programmer, I believe he has just resolved the issue with Garmin devices. I recently purchased a new Garmin inReach Mini and was able to successfully register and use it last weekend with GlidePort...but only after he worked on the problem.

Default Glideport problem

Someone is doing something thankfully. I used to be able to only see tracks in 3D and there was no planet Earth... just stars. Now planet Earth is back!

Thanks,

Here is how to make a new URL to register your SPOT with glideport. It can be done with no help from the glideport admins.

share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=09zinCBIVfVFEcsbxqddrCIFbMlqMPx xx
where the example starting with 09z is replaced by your own XML link. This has to be a separate link with a different title than your shared page. Here is how to get your XML number:-
1) log in to findmespot.com
2)Maps
3)History mode
4)Manage (little lines with check marks icon)
5)Shared Views
6) Add shared view
7) Make a shared view with a different tile such as MYXMLFeed
8) Home
9) XML Feed
10) View Details on MYXMLFeed
11) The XML Feed ID should be displayed. Copy and paste it, append it to the text
share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=
and you are good to go.
Worked for me!!

Sometimes a SPOT will work for years with glideport, then sudenly stop working. This is because if glideport ever has a communication difficulty with SPOT, it automatically deletes that particular XML feed as a safety precaution. The fix is to make another XML feed on your SPOT account, then register this new feed on glideport. There is a way to test your XML feed, simply go to this URL:-
https://api.findmespot.com/spot-main...x/message.json
with your own XML Feed ID. If you get an error message then there is something wrong with the feed, contact SPOT. If you get position fixes but glideport does not display your SPOT, then make a new XML feed and register the new feed with SPOT. Each new feed typically lasts several years, and you can delete obsolete ones on the SPOT site.
