Default Question Commercial pilot

no... if the seal is missing.. he has no idea if it has been discharged..
pressure indicator may show "in the green".. but dials have been known to
lie.. if his T.O. says the seal needs to be there... then it needs to be
there.. and the PILOT is in CHARGE... not the ramp agent.. not the
mechanic..

all he would need to do is get to EWR and have the mech down there write him
up for bringing him a bad extinguisher to have to swap out..

then everything really hits the fan..

Working The gate..........500 PVD-EWR......It's 25 minutes in the
air....during school vacation oversold.........30 pax going on
cruises.......20 pax with kids going to Disney......10 pax going to St
Martin and only 1 flight out of EWR ......All the flights are
oversold..........Pilot holds up flight because the plastic seal is

missing
on his fire extinguisher. It appears full.....the first officer's
extinguisher is fine....local mechanic says it's ok.....general

maintenance
says it's ok.....he continues to have a hissy fit.....40 minute

delay......
Question was he being a d__k Head or not?

No,
The Captain is ultimately responsible for and authority to the safety of
the flight.
I had this situation today at Dulles. The Extinguisher was fine. We
re-tagged it and sent them on their way.

that insignificant missing seal while ramping the ship, guess who's ass is
in the sling?

That boy was making sure his meal ticket was not going to be yanked...

The pilot in command has final authority. It's that simple. I would have
done the same thing. If you start breaking the rules the system breaks down
and people can die.

The Captain was doing his job, which is to operate the aircraft safely and
within the confines of company policy and federal regulations. The airline
is responsible for the schedule and the maintenance status of the aircraft.

When the crew arrived at the aircraft, they noticed the seal missing from
the fire extinguisher during their normal cockpit safety checks. Normal
protocol at this point is for the Captain to make an entry into the aircraft
AML (Aircraft Maintenance Log) stating the defect. Example: "Seal missing
from cockpit fire extinguisher." At that point, they call maintenance and
the aircraft is in the hands of maintenance until a corrective action
balances the discrepancy. Upon maintenance correcting the discrepancy, the
Captain then reviews the AML that it has been completed properly and then he
accepts the aircraft by affixing his signature to it.

Blame the maintenance people for taking 40 minutes to hang a few fire
extinguisher in the cockpit.

Commend the crew for doing their job.

Forget the FAA ramp check against the crew, Would you prefer a
Valuejet situation were the whole airline gets shut down because the
F/O's extingusher has not got enough retardant to put out the fire and
the Capt's ext has been previously discharged? Those needles don't
move except durring recharging, they freeze in position all the time.
There's nothing worse than fire in flight.

No prob, old man,

You've got the hardest job in aviation. Stress would be less if the
gov freed up the aviation trust fund and built more than just one
national airport in 20 years.

Hang in there,

pac
