Default Colorado Representative calls for "no fly zones" over prisons.

Morning all -- only been a lurker for a while as I haven't been FLYING
in a while, (damn house takes too much money). But regarding
advocacy: Pueblo rep Buffie McFayden, (let the jokes fly), is
calling for no-fly zones over state and federal pens. I just heard a
portion of the interview on our public radio station KCFR, and among
her reasonings is "it's possible for small airplanes to drop riot gear
into prison yards".

The prison she's talking about is the supermax prison in Colorado,
which is already among the most secure in the country.

Here's the link - The audio should be posted soon. I'm e-mailing this
to AOPA as well.

Colorado Lawmakers Call for Better Security at Supermax
Colorado lawmakers are asking federal officials to improve security at
the state's Supermax prison, home to some of the nation's most
dangerous criminals. Ryan Warner talks to Democratic state
representative Buffie McFayden, whose district, near Pueblo, includes
Supermax.

As whacky as this might seem, it is at least more plausible than the
imaginary threats that have resulted in other "no-fly zones". One obvious
fault in Buffie's logic is that those willing to break major laws by
providing weapons to incarcerated criminals are not likely to care about
such minor issues as no-fly zones. Perhaps one of her constituents could
point this out to her?

When was the last time she attempted such a drop? Are air drops of
riot gear a pressing problem in the United States?

Maybe candidates shouldn't be allowed to have stupid names like
Buffie, lest the electorate die laughing. It's about as likely as
private planes dropping things into prisons.

The audio is posted and her no fly zone request is at 2:50:

Of course I'm not against more prison security - but THIS example it's
already a supermax prison, hence if they're already AT the fence point
a seven versus 20 fence doesn't address the problem the prisoner is
already AT the fence.

Christ what a stupid example of creating a problem that ISN'T there.
Is it too altrusistic to just say "put the money into the schools"
Methinks Buffie has been watching too many episodes of Prison Break.

In article .com,
says...

A no-fly zone?
That's a pussy-footed move for Buffy!
Why not cut to the chase and just make it plain ILLEGAL to break out of
prison, or even to assist anyone in doing same? That'll stop them dead in
their tracks !!

A no-fly zone is irrelevant for all the reasons previously noted here
and one more...in the event of a real prison riot or other extreme
problem, a TFR would be issued. Just like all the TFRs we get out
here during fire season.

Unfortunately, this was the only item that made it to the national
news. The more pressing security issues at Supermax include

1) 6-12 month delay translating and reviewing prisoner's mail
2) limited inspection of packages and mail
3) unhappy guard staff

Buffie was going for quick media coverage.

Instead of this no fly zone, build a dome over the prison...

just about as reasonable...
