Why the negative dihedral of the Predator unmanned aircaft? Is is to protect
the rear airfoils from rocket blast?

No, it had that arrangement long before anyone thought of hanging
weapons on it.

I they just didn't want the weight of both vertical and horizontal
control surfaces.

Anhedral is the correct term. This article gives a good explanation of the
