Services on the same wire can occasionally fail for other reasons than the
physical wire, with the others still working.

I have Vonage for our home phone and if the network goes down, all calls are
automatically routed to my cell phone (or whatever number I choose).

I pay $25 for Vonage with unlimited long distance including Canada and most
of Europe. Just basic phone service is about $35 from Ma Bell (Yeah, I
know...but I love that derogatory term).
