Job Opening for Homebuilder RAPID PROTOTYPER

I'm a former participant in RAH several years back. I now work for a
small aerospace company that makes aftermarket helicopter parts. Our
prototyping shop is in desperate need of a very talented
fabricator/prototyper with the kind of talent not normally found in
giant aerospce companies. My boss has asked me to assist him in finding
the right person. I believe an active homebuilder or experimental
airplane fabricator is just the ticket.

THIS posting is just a heads-up to spread the word. An additional
posting will be made as soon as we set up an e-mail box for the
responses.

The skills we are looking for are :

First and foremost, we need a rapid prototyping genius. Someone
reminiscent of the "good old days" at Scaled and the early days of
homebuilt composites, where a new idea was executed in foam, glass,
duct tape and Bondo on a quick and dirty basis, then smashed and
rebuilt a couple of times, THEN made into a production buck or mold.

Fast turnaround. We know where to find a hundred prototypers that will
plod along and have it done "next month hopefully". We need the kind of
energy and speed to get an idea into a visible form immediately, then
get it into an experimental form very quickly.

We need someone who can stare at a part and "see" the air flowing
around and through it. We need someone who can come up with shapes and
cross-sections to interface an internal part to the external airframe.

The kind of guy (sorry, or girl) who can Bondo some foam blocks on an
engine, then carve, sand and glass a cowling that flows beautifully
with the airplane, THEN do the same with the airflow inside the cowl.
And have it done NOW because the plane needs to fly to Oshkosh.

This person does NOT have to be an engineer, a pilot, or a licensed
A&P, Those qualifications would not make a difference one way or
another. We need to find the talent and speed.

This person also must understand how to get things done in terms of
getting the parts and supplies needed, knowing what materials and tools
to keep in the shop, and be able to work with or without others.

Unfortunately, we are NOT looking for "highly experienced homebuilders"
who have slowed down or burned out. It's the speed and energy we need
every bit as much as the finished product.

The reward for finding this rare combination of talent and energy is
that the position will pay VERY well. Location is in the best part of
the Northern California Bay Area, Marin County, only 15 minutes from

That was interesting Ron, I noted the "act and you will eat--think and..."
part and it reminded me of a meeting once where I was advised of a customer
requirement and all involved started to discuss solutions. I started in and
installed the required solution and moved on. Several weeks later I got
email saying they had finally decided on how to proceed and I was forced to
sheepishly admit that I had finished the job on my own some time ago. Just
part of working for a big company.

Unhhh, this guy already exists... Name is Burt Rutan... Likes to build
airplanes that look strange but fly really well... I suspect that his
compensation package will need to be impressive...

Actually, not to pick on the guy who wrote the original post - but a
lifetime of experience in business make me suspect that they want
someone that good, who will live in a bare, single room with a 25 watt
bulb hanging from the ceiling and work 18 hour days for peanuts, so
they can charge the hell out of the customer...
