Icom A-24 Transciever: Any thoughts about it?
Anyone here have an Icom-24? If so how do
you like it? What are some things that you dislike about it? Thanks Matt |

Matt -
I purchased one from Sporty's about 3 months ago. I haven't had an opportunity to use it while airborn, but use it for ATIS, getting my IFR clearance, etc. My biggest complaint is that there is no battery status indicator. It only shows a Low-Battery indicator when, you guessed it, the battery is low. How stupid is that??? Maybe I'm just missing a setting somewhere, but it drives me nuts. I'm making a longer trip this weekend and plan to fool around with the VOR capability. We'll see how it goes. Charlie Matt no email wrote: Anyone here have an Icom-24? If so how do you like it? You would think that it would be a standard, like how cellular phones display a battery status bar. Let me know if there is anything else enlightening about the radio on your long flight. Have a good flight, Matt |

The flight went well... 3.5 hours of actual. It was my first trip in IMC
since I got my rating in January. It was awesome. Went IMC at 1000' MSL and broke out at my destination at 700' MSL. I visited the Potomac TRACON for an ADIZ seminar and tour of the facility. The NAV receiver in the radio worked, but it seems like to get the most use out of it, you'd have to hook it up to an external antenna... the range just wasn't what I thought it would be. I could see how it would be useful though if my radios failed in IFR weather. I had to make a decision as to whether I should get an handheld radio or GPS. I think I'd rather navigate with VORs and have a radio then no radio and a VFR GPS unit... Charlie "Matt" " no email wrote in message ... Have a good flight, Matt Ok I'll keep that in mind when I'm flying. I'll see what works and what doesn't. Its always good to know the limits of your equipment. Take care, Matt |
