Default Life Vests - Buy or Rent

What do you do out there - buy or rent? I have need for 6 life vests for a
flight to Cancun at the end of October. Should I rent or buy?

TIA, {|;-)

I live in eastern Massachusetts and fly to Nantucket a lot.
I bought three life vests as a "just in case". Since I fly a
single engine I tend to keep within gliding distance, but
I like knowing the life vests are there just in case.

If this is a one shot deal flying over water and you don't see
doing it often, I would say rent.

Pete

There's one under the seat on most airliners. A few flights and you have
your six :-)

I bought from Aircraft Spruce.
They sell repackaged and recertified vests for about $45.00 instead of
the usual $250.00.

$250? Here in the UK you can get them for £24.67 + VAT new.
(£28.99 if you're buying from within the EU)

Hi Paul
If you want cheap, I can probably find you even cheaper,
but what you are referring to is definitely not a certified aviation
lifevest. (And from the picture it doesn't even look as though it would
float an unconscious person face-up). When you are in the water,
promises and guarantees mean zip - it's too late - can you imagine using
that vest and floating, facedown - unconscious?. You need a lifevest
that will do the job right now - 10 out of 10 times.
I teach survival courses, and this year I spent a full day on an
underwater egress course. You do need the right lifevest in an aircraft.
Here is some good reading for you -

Well, it's a certified yachting emergency life vest. They're the same ones
that sell in the aviation places for about £60-£80. :-) They are 150N vests,
the same as any other, manually inflatable. Some of the others have
additional features such as D-rings, harnesses designed to be winched by
a helicopter, etc, but inside they're basically the same.

There's a difference between the constant wear ones and the use once
ones. I've got a couple of ex-airline ones (out of date) that cost me $9
each. :-) Certified for aviation but a) they're out of date and b) they're
not suitable for putting round your neck each time you fly without wearing
out. The ones I mentioned come in a protective jacket so you can use
them (unactivated!) every time you fly over water.

From the picture, they don't appear to be inflated.

Maybe they're just pictures!
Which of course are perfectly suitable for rescuing people involved in
pictures of a ditching
In Canada, where I live, we are not allowed to use boating life
preservers in aircraft that are beyond gliding distance of land -
we have to use certified life preservers for aircraft - and they are
REALLY expensive - and they have to be self inflating, and have to be
sealed in an air positive bag - so if it is breached we know before we
need it - and we have to keep them current!

Ah, we don't have to have them at all. Just one of those "nice things
to have" here in the UK. :-) I'm probably going to buy a couple of them
and maybe a life raft before I start doing serious over water flights.

I guess it's like anything else...put "CAA certified" on it and you can
at best double the price, at worst stick a zero on the end.

The last thing you want in a light aircraft is a self-inflating life vest,
especially if it's in a high wing plane.

Yes of course the actual life jacket is one of those inflatable things
which resides inside the collar that you see in the photo.

Here's a similar one sold for aviation purposes:
