Default DC-VA-MD ADIZ

As I understand it, flying in an ADIZ (VFR) requires a
"DEFENSE VFR" flight plan to be filed. Is this true with
the DC ADIZ as well?

What are the differences between the ADIZs off the coasts
and the DC ADIZ?

The "DCA ADIZ" flight plan is not a DVFR plan.

ADIZ rules are fairly straightforward:
1. File a flight plan.
2. Squawk a discret beacon code.
3. Maintain two-way communications with ATC.

In a nutshell, the "DCA ADIZ" VFR flight plan is just an IFR flight plan
with a VFR altitude in the altitude block and the phrase "DCA ADIZ" in the
remarks section. This plan must be filed with FSS prior to entry/departure.
Activating the plan is accomplished by contacting ATC to receive your squawk
code.

If entering the ADIZ from points outside, contact ATC using the appropriate
frequency for your sector. Once you have received your beacon code, you
have established two-way comms and activated your flight plan. Simply
monitor the frequency and continue.

If departing from an ADIZ airport, contact clearance delivery either on the
radio or by landline. They will give you a beacon code and a departure
frequency. Switch to CTAF for takeoff, then switch to the provided
departure frequency to establish two-way comms with ATC. This is
accomplished with the following: "Potomac Approach, N123". All you have to
hear is "N123, roger" to establish two-way comms. If the controller has the
time, he will probably offer you flight following, but don't feel you have
to talk to him beyond this initial exchange.

No specific clearance is required for ADIZ flight. However, the enclosed
Class B airspace is still Class B. Stay out of it unless otherwise cleared.

DO NOT squawk 1200 inside the ADIZ. Bad things happen if you do.

If leaving the ADIZ, you will probably be informed by ATC that you are
"departing the ADIZ, squawk VFR, frequency change approved." If you know
you are 3-5 miles outside the ADIZ and have not heard this, go ahead and
squawk VFR. The code issued to you by PCT is very likely a local code only.

If landing inside the ADIZ, inform ATC when you have the field in sight.
They will reply with something like "maintain beacon code until on the
ground, frequency change approved."

DO NOT squawk 1200 inside the ADIZ. Bad things happen if you do.

ATC have worked hard to make VFR flight in the ADIZ as painless as possible
for everybody involved. Just remember that if you're VFR inside the ADIZ,
you're still VFR. You do not need a clearance to enter the ADIZ. You will
need a clearance for the Class B, but not the ADIZ.

Enjoy your flight! As I've said before, we need more pilots refusing to be
intimidated by this airspace while AOPA/EAA/[insert favorite organization
here] continue to work on its abolishment.

NOI!! The DC ADIZ has nothing to do with the old ADIZ other
than they decided to use that acronym. None of the real ADIZ
rules apply. The DC ADIZ rules are spelled out in the NOTAM.

Essentially you must file either a special ADIZ (NOT DVFR) plan
with a human flight service briefer or file IFR, you must obtain a
squawk before launching (or entering the arispace), and you must
talk to Potomac Approach.
