Not necessarily. I use this antenna with excellent results.
http://advancedaircraft.com/index.htm Aircraft Spruce carries them. No ground plane needed. Bob Fred wrote: Robert: Why not just "installed such-and-such xpdr IAW manufacturer's installation manual?"
