Hughes Racer down
There was a very extensive article about the repro Hughes H-1/1B Racer in
the May '03 issue of Air & Space. Jim Wright was the owner who spent over $1million and 35,000 hours building it. Well, it's just been reported that a Hughes H-1 has crashed in Yellowstone Park, killing the lone pilot who was on his way back from Oshkosh to Oregon. The pilot wasn't identified in the accident report yet, but the registration WAS reported to be in the name of Jim Wright, the subject of the Air & Space article. Beyond the sad loss of life, it's an even worse loss considering that the "exact" repro was itself a reproduction of a one-of-a-kind aircraft. MJC |
